Oil Capacity

I hate to bother everyone with something so trivial, but I've had no luck finding my diesel owners manual supplement.

What is the oil refill capacity after draining the oil and replacing the filter? And is there anything unusual, or any other checks I need to make while changing the oil?

My truck is a 93 7.3L Turbo, I've got my tach back in operation, and a much happier E4OD,...... just got get this oil change done so I can finally get it on the road!

Thanks for your help.

Also with the addition of a Powerstroke filter (which is all I use now) you can go with I believe 11 quarts. Or is it 12?

Is there any other advantages by going with a powerstroke filters besides the extra capacity? Also is it at all worth the money paying for the high end filters? Thx.

Well, the bigger filter givens more filtering capacity...I just think it's a better option.

As for the higher end filters...dunno, that just depends. A guy did an oil filter analysis online a couple years ago, you could probably find it through google, it was pretty good info.

With good filters, good oil and regular service intervals, you are going to put around 400,000 miles on the engine before you need to think about doing any work to it.

Cheap filters and oil with to many miles between oil changes, considerably less mileage out of the engine.

I always use the Stroke filter. It ends up being 11 quarts oil & filter change. I get MOTORCRAFT FL-1995 filter from Wal-mart for under $10. I usually empty the shelf to keep stock at home. Also been using the Motorcraft diesel oil 15w40 from Walmart with no issues. I use to be a Rotella guy but you can get the motorcraft jug of 5 quarts for the price of 4qt Rotella. It's like getting a free qt for every gallon.

yupp, the Powerstroke filter will fit the IDI's. its justa bit longer than the IDI filter, so it hold more, has more filtering capacity, and if its true I've been told that the IDI filter was rated at 10 micron and the PSD filter is rated at 2 micron

I installed a 1991 7.3 engine and put 10 qts. oil in and dipstick is still just below add mark. I understand this to be the right amount of oil with non powerstroke motorcraft oil filter. what is your guess as to why?

Did the dipstick tube get pulled out giving you an inaccurate reading? I would check it at the block.

Did someone swap dipsticks around?

You might find this funny, but Ford is good for silly little things like this..... dipstick length would change between certain years, models etc.

I replaced the o-ring on the tube, I thought I pushed it all the way down in, it felt like it bottomed out in the collar piece that goes into the block. could be the tube was replaced with one from a 7.3 stroker. I guess my big question is does this engine take 10 qts. for sure? I have a Haynes manual that says 15 qts. but I seriously have doubts because this engine has the 6.9 oil pan on it cause it was in better shape and from all my measuring they are the same pan and Rockauto lists the same part no. for both 7.3 and 6.9 oil pans.

6.9/7.3 is exactly the same except for bore size and head bolts.

Yes it's 10 quarts (9.5L with filter).

Believe me, I have 4 of these pigs
