low oil pressure

1st post for me.

I have a 87 f250 with the big 460 motor, carburated don't drive it much, less than 2 k per year, yesterday drove on freeway and noticed that my oil pressure seamed low - less than 10% on the guage it would move up to 15-20 % when increasing the rpm to 3k or so but would then return to 10%. Started climbing a grade and bam the temperature guage climbs... pull over and check the coolant level is ok with no leaks. Continue driving 10 minutes to destination shut of engine and it boils over and looses all of the coolant, had it towed it home.

Can low oil pressure cause the engine to overheat? likely causes? I'm thinkin a clogged oil cooler? any input appreciated.

oil pickup screen is probably clogged.

it is.

the gauge in the dash is really an idiot light, it moves if the psi drops below 7 or the sender is faulty.

sounds like your engine is not getting enough oil, so i say the screen is clogged.

Ok thanks again I'll inspect.

How about long term damage to the engine, any history on longevity after such an occurance?

no oil pressure = death to engine

how long? depends.

get a mechanical gauge and hook it up to see if you have any oil pressure.

get a pressure test done on cooling system.

i would suggest not driving truck until this is solved.

How often did you change the oil on your truck? Regular intervals as reqiured by Ford?
Typically the pump screen gets clogged becuase of paraphine build up on the rockers, valve covers. Paraphine/sludge will build up over time as the oil degrades and should have been changed at a regular interval.

It is possible to get you going temporarily by reversing the pump and blowing out the screen with and electric drill. Remove the distributor, mark it first. Pull the shaft out and using a long extenstion, with an appropriately sized socket reverse the drill to blow out the screen. Reinstall and change the oil. I would add a quart of Rislone to the oil mix.

I bought the truck 3 years ago w/77 k and the oil was clean, no service records. Oil pressure guage was always at 30% I didn't think anything of it. Truck never overheated, ran well, sucked gas, changed oil every year has 84k now. This low oil pressure happened all of a sudden while climbing a grade, noticed that the oil guage was at less than 10% gave the engine gas and the guage would go up and then come right back down as the engine smoothed out. Truck overheats now so I suspect that the bearings got hot and cracked the head, scrapped the Truck to a friend thanks for the feedback!

Yes I was bummed out also, but a 87 460 just wasn't worth my time to repair, so I picked up a 02 Expy with the 5.4 triton 105K for 6k I am very happy with it .

I think you were right on with the oil screen, I disconnected the oil cooler and started the motor an it pumped oil like crazy, filled a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 way in 30 seconds, when I put my thumbs over the hose ends I could stop the oil, I know this is a crude measurement but I didn't have a guage to check oil pressure.... so yea I think the screen was plugged too bad I didn't know it was a nice driving truck but my friend will get good use of its doner parts, thanks for all the responses and condolences, kinda like losing an old friend we do get attached to our trucks.

my own Oil pressure news

Today as I was heading to my bank to make a deposit, I got a glimpse of my Idiot guage for oil pressure as it swiftly slammed from the middle range between low and high and crashed at the low.

After about 10 minutes in the bank and another 5 minutes to check and add oil the pressure went back to normal when I started the truck up.
I proceeded back toward home but the OP dropped after about 7-8 minutes up the road. I pulled over and waited another 10 minutes then restarted and had OP again. So, I once again headed toward home.
About 5 minutes later the OP dropped and this time, I noticed my valves seemingto get slightly more noisey. So, finally I pulled into the parking lot of the local library and here I am posting about Oil Pressure loss.

I am hoping to be able to limp the truck home another 15 miles if the pressure will keep coming back long enough for me to do so without major damage. Heck, my poor 88 F250 only has 296,190 miles on it.
Looks like I will be having to pull the Oil Pan and doing some research as to why the OP now is dropping. Maybe my screen is clogged and can be cleaned or some equally easy fix.

Sorry this was so long winded.
