E4OD Linkage question

I originally posted this in the transmissions forum, but didn't get a hit, so I thought I'd repost it here....Thanks !

--------------
Hey guys, Through an act of stupidity, I killed my '90 Bronco. Without too many details, lets just say something tried to exit the transmission...violently. I found a '92 F-150 with a recently rebuilt tranny, but a bad engine, so I yanked the tranny out of it. Once I got it home, and had it side by side with my old one, I noticed a slight difference in the shift linkage post. The '90 post is about 2" long, with a linkage arm coming right off it. The '92 is about 3" long with no arm, and the last inch or so is threaded. I didn't realize the difference till I had them both side by side, and didn't pull any of the linkage off. Is it just a matter of finding the linkage arm that bolts to the tranny or can I swap posts fairly easily ? I have a couple pics of the two uploaded to my gallery. Any advice is appreciated !!

Thanks !!!

The casings for the 89 and 90 E4OD's are slightly different from later models. This may account for the difference in linkage. I would submit that as long as you can make the linkage move the shift lever on the tranny to the corresponding position indicated by the shift lever in the truck, you shouldn't have too much else to worry about.

(As a side note, the critical device for the E4OD is the MLPS (Manual Lever Positioning Sensor) down near the shift lever n the tranny itself. As long as this sensor remains intact and aligned, the E4OD will have the proper control from the ECM during operation.)

Lever has a seal that can be replaced, maybe the levers could be changed. My 1990 Bronco Service Manual shows a drawing of the lever that's similar to the one that's not threaded.

The process of changing levers includes dropping the pan taking off the filter removing a spring pin, remove inner detent lever nut using a 21mm box wrench.

Alternatively you could find the lever that fits the transmission with the threaded bolt, it's just a different way to hold the lever on,

A bolt is cheaper than bolt with lever type situation at the bean counter table at Ford.
