good model years

Hi
I,m thinking about getting rid of my 98 expy. Does anyone know what years are good for these trucks? I want something with low miles a 2005 or 2006. Should i shy away from the expy and look at GM or toyota?

thanks

You should be fine with anything 2005 and newer. 2005 is the first year for the 5.4l 3v. They work great other than the spark plugs. Keep in mind that at 100,000 miles +/- they will need to bechanged. They are prone to getting stuck in the heads. Most shops have done enough of them ow they know how to change them. Some come right out some break off. Just keep that inmind when you are shopping. Once the plugs are changed you are looking at another 100k no problem

2003

I bought a 2003 Expy XLT 4x4 brand new just over 6 years ago. Got the clutch packs and the rear blend door actuators fixed under warranty, replaced the lousy Continental tires with a set of Michelins at 50K, and it has otherwise been bulletproof through 80K miles. I maintain it well, and can see getting 100K more out of this truck.

That said, I agree with the recommendation to get a 2005 or newer for the extra valve-per-cylinder and the resulting increase in HP. But each model year seem to come with its own little unique set of issues, no different from any other manufacturer.

Good luck in your search!

I've had good luck with my '03, other than a head problem and clutch packs both fixed under warranty. Crappy Conti's were gone at 50, then Michelins, and now Bridgestones. Best car I've ever owned, but 03's were hit or miss. 120k and i've been putting off plugs for a while now. Someday soon.

If you guys got 50K out of your Conti's, that's quite impressive. My factory set were just about worn out at about 22K.

When I bought my '04 they were still on it at 55k, and had probably another 20k left on them. They were dry rotted so they went! My brother who owned it was religious about tire rotation.

I just bought an 05 and the original continentals where on it with 70K miles. The tread depth was still around 6 to 7/ 32's with perfectly even tread wear. they did have a few cracks beginning to form on the sidewalls. This was confirmed by the seller who was the original owner. I still dumped them for a new set of michelins as soon as we got home.
