Another 460 build??
Another 460 build??
73 460 with d3ve heads
my brother has just jumped into this build using flat top pistons and everything is already being done at the machineshop now. Not being all that knowledgable about the 460 I am kind of concerned about detonation issues. From my searches it seems as though it might not be a problem but the 460 builds ive come across seem to vary quite a bit. So i guess my question is what would be the best cam, intake/carb. Will be going into a 79 f150 4x4 on 35's with 3.55's (auto). Nice streetability with decent towing power and of course good power for the occasional bogging session. 350hp and 450tq should be adequate i would think. All suggestions and/or advice appreciated. TIA

i think the edelbrock performer 460 intake would be nice, and maybe one of the 4x4extreme line cams, they make alot of low end tq. obivously different ones will put your power in different ranges, and i dont know which is which but that line is prolly a good one to look at. and for the carb, 750, but the choice is yours which brand, i couldnt tell you whats better since ive only worked with efi
the nice thing about the 460 is that the sheer volume of the engine lends itself to torque down low. that means you can get away with a single plane manifold for upping the horsepower output up high. there are a ton of head choices out there for the 460. edelbrock makes a nice set, CJ or SCJ heads are nice, or you can up the ante and go with a set of Kaase heads. if you're going to keep the stock heads, look into having a good P&P, or keep your eyes open on craigslist for good deals. remember a lot of people post them under 429 instead of 460. As for carb, i've got an 870 holley on mine, and while its a little much, its pretty much an otherwise stock engine until i fall into money again. for an engine thats had a little work it'd be just right. horsepower TV just had a recent 460 build that gave some okay advice, or enginemasters magazine just had a great article on the 460 a few months ago. with an engine that big, the only real bottleneck is your budget.
