I finally have the extra money to order my new clutch after shelling out $$$ for house painting, kid's guitar, remodeling project, etc... question is, for the 1960 223, an 11" or 10" clutch is available. The one I tore out of the truck is a 10", but who's to say the PO put the right one in? Does anyone know if the bolt pattern on the flywheel determines the size of the disc? Sorry, I don't have the shop manual yet...I'm asking because an extra inch in diameter gives a good bit of extra surface area on the flywheel...how do you tell if you need the 10 or 11? Thanks...
Yes, the pressure plate bolt pattern will govern which clutch can be installed. I have, however, seen Ford flywheels that are drilled for a 10 inch and an 11 inch clutch.
Unless you are figuring to do a bunch of heavy hauling, the 10" is a much more driver-friendly piece. If you have a 3-sp, that is undoubtedly what your truck came with. 11" were usually on heavier trucks or where a 4-sp tranny was fitted. Note also that there are diaphragm-type clutches available for some 10" applications; I'm using one behind my flatty and it is much smoother than the Long (3-finger) type. Cost is the same as a Long. NAPA sells them.
