Brake bleeding ?

I'm going to bleed my brakes and I was going to order some fluid.
What type - DOT 3 or 4
What brands of fluid are good, I was looking at ATE Super Blue brake fluid.
How much fluid will I need.
Thank for the help.

just get prestone Dot 3 synthetic. Works great and hydroscopically collects less moisture. Supposedly. Sold at Walmart, AZ and O'Reilleies

I just used 4 qts. doing mine but they had not been done since I bought the truck and it took a lot of fluid before I was satisfied. About 6 bucks a qt. I harp this item on here and neglected mine. They are nice now.

Bleeding the ABS system takes a bit of work --- do you have the procedure?

I am not convinced of the benefits of synthetic mixed, so I just buy regular (Ford spec. approved) brake fluid, but I purge frequently (every 2 or 3 years).

I used Valvoline's Synthetic DOT 3/4...used 4 qts as well...it actually took this much to rid the system of the old black coffee colored crap that came out...man there was some serious junk in these lines. Be careful not to allow the reservoir get below the ABS sensor ...I just add new fluid once it got down to the middle plastic molding line on the reservoir. Before I did anything I sucked out all the old from the reservoir...you could use a turkey baster or a small liquid vacuum like sold at harbor freight. I also made the job much easier by using speed bleeder valves (replaced oem with one-way check valve bleeder valve)...then just attached clear tubing and pumped into a clear container to see what was coming out. Not many places recalim used brake fluid...thats the hard part.

Always start with the farthest wheel from the mastercylinder. So, right rear, left rear, right front and then left front. If you are in no hurry, the master cylinder is high enough that the system will self bleed. Just put a clear hose on the bleeded valve, open valve one turn and let it bleed. Do this with the master cylinder cap unscrewed and just sitting on the reservoir. It actually drains fairly quick unless you are in a hurry. I had other odds and ends to do on the truck and had to keep an eye on the reservoir and drain jar.

I have also read that you need to use a scan tool to open the ABS valve. This is what would be preventing me from doing this myself.

Not true. The system will self bleed. Just did mine Thursday.

This is exactly what I did minus the speed bleeders. I bought them but didn't know if all the fluid would come out when taking the stock ones off. Does the fluid free flow when the stock ones come out?? That will be a project for another day.

Thanks for the replies.

I did the full monty this weekend pads and changed the fluid. I drove it around today and am pulling to the right. Any ideas??? I brake parts cleanered everything before I put it back together. So there shouldn't be any grease on the parts.

I am pulling to the right. I assume this means the left side is not effectively braking. What should I check first???
