I am a newbie and really need some help with a truck I just bought.
It is a 1992 Ford F150 4x4 with a 5.0 and the Auto. E40D trans.
It shifts very hard into 2nd and sometimes doesn;t want to go into 4th and I overheated the transmission.
What do I do??? Is it junk or can I save it. I do not have the money to take it to the shop. Can I put any other trans. in it?
Thanks So much for all your help..........
As far as the hard shifting to 2nd gear goes, mine does that, sometimes it will bark a 2nd shifting at 5,000rpm's, Fluid and filter is definitely important, mine was grinding when the TC locked up in OD. Generally shifting crappy and all that. Changed the fluid and filter and put some Lucas in and its a hole different ball game. Made a huge difference and a bigger difference was when I changed out the TPS. Runs like a brand new truck now. Drive it about 45 miles one way everyday with no probs. So if you think the tranny might be usable with a tune up then I would give it a shot. But if its destroyed it would prolly be best to find a used one somewhere. What is the transmission doing now, just not working at all or what. Be a little more specific and somebody will give you a good idea on what you can do.
the oil is brown and smells burnt. it works exept for the shifting hard and not wanting to go into 4th. the last time i drove it in overheated and was smoking really bad
It also has no reverse. The truck will still move but once it gets hot it smokes. My uncle warmed up the truck to check the fluid level and when he pulled the dip stick he said it started spueing smoke. How will I know if it is shot and I need a new one or if changing the fluids and filters will be enough... or is their a way to tell?

Hopefully somebody will chime in w/ more experience on this. I really can't say whether it will help(save) your tranny. Once it gets hot it smokes, definitely doesn't sound good though.
