DIY/JY Front Disc conversion?

Hi Y'all,

I've searched a bit, not found much info. Is there any possibility of doing a front disc brake conversion on a 48 F1 straight axle with junkyard or readily available parts? I am talking about something that the average, extremely mechanically inclined and fundage deficient person could build in their own fairly well equipped shop?

Looking for interchanges, part numbers, CAD drawings of caliper brackets, etc.

I've seen a few kits out there but would much rather build it myself. I am not against changing bolt patterns if I have to.

The brakes on my truck are totally FUBAR'ed due to PO incompetance anyway so I might as well aim a little higher.

All parts can come from a salvage yard the main thing is the bracket that mounts to the spindle where the calipers attach to, mine is about 1/2: thick steel if you can cut the brackets it's highly likely, or just purchase the brackets from a vender probable for around $150 but don't quote me.

Ok, that helps, any idea of donor vehicles for rotors, calipers, etc? I can get 1/2" cut, no problem. The calipers I keep seeing in pics of conversion kits do look vaguely like Ford's, as do the rotors. I guess if I can get a set of rotors and calipers, I can mock it up and make my own patterns.

IIRC, the CPP, Speedway, and any other place that sells the conversion kit, comes from ECI. However, to keep things from getting confusing, I'll post what I have from CPP.

If you are using the CPP 5x5.5" kit, you need:

73-93 Ford F100/F150 rotors
71-87 GM 1/2 ton truck calipers

A2 Outer bearings
A13 Inner bearings
4148 Bearing Seals

Here's the instruction sheet:

GM single piston calipers seem to be the unit of choice. Rotors are too cheap to bother with used ones IMHO The difficult part is the hub (in the bolt pattern you desire) and bearings. You may be able to find someone on here that has converted their F1 and has info on what parts their kit used (hopefully the original manufacturer included that info should you need to replace a bearing or hub on the weekend in E.BF, USA.

"Can" this be done without the bearing adaptor sleeve?

if not, that is still something you can't source from JY or donor vehicle.

I suspect that you could buy the bearing adaptor sleeve as a replacement part from one of the kit suppliers.
