1972 bedside trim removal?
1972 bedside trim removal?
I am repairing the rusted bed seam on my 72 longbed. It is a Sport Custom with inch and a half trim just below the horizontal body seam.I did a search in this forum and found some information on removing it. I tried to remove it yesterday but could not figure out how to get the fasteners at the ends to release.I got the plastic fasteners that are pop riveted to the body loose from the trim,is there a special tool to get the end fasteners to release? The trim has never been removed before.I tried to get my hand up behind to see if I could get the bolt off but my big old hands would not make it up in there.Any advice is appreciated.
I have already repaired and painted the cab drip rail area that was starting to rust,I used the Nason Acrylic and got good results. The paint color is much brighter than the Cardinal Red (T code) on the rest of the truck.Does any one know what the Nason color number or recipie is for this color? The bottom color is wimbelton white (code M).The counter guy at the paint store said he couldn't find the color in his computer so he mixed it by comparing it to my truck. Thanks again.

bedside trim
Well I finally got the bed trim off,I loosened all the plastic fasteners and made my own tool out of a piece of banding to release the rear trim fastener. The front fastener is a different type than the rear one and I had to swing the trim piece up to get it to come off.
The rear fastener does not have a nut on the back like the front one, instead it has two skinny arms that are shoved thru then twisted back into the backside of the bedside. There is no way to remove this as I cannot get my hand up behind either one of these fasteners.I ended up wrecking the rear one to get it off and the front one is still on.I want to get them off and repaint then put the new fasteners on.How do you get these things on if you cannot get them off? I was looking at the ones they sell online but could not see if they were exactly the same.Has anyone else had this problem and how did it work out for you? Thanks for any help.

Bedside trim
Finally had to have my wife take the nut off the trim retainer at the front of the bed as her arm fits up there just fine.
So the way To remove the bedside trim is---(1) remove the front fastener (2) loosen the trim from the plastic anchors between the front and rear fasteners (3)slide the trim back until the rear fastener is at the weep hole and raise the trim piece up and off.
