My guys called me tonight saying my truck (03 6.0 280k mls) blew the coolant cap. when i got there a hour later to add water and a cap the engine was still boiling. Two hours later it finaly look water, i checked the oil and it was only a quart low but the dipstick had melted. now i have no oil pressure and the truck wont start.
Just how dam hard and longer did they run it after it got hot? There's a reason their called idiots lights/buzzer. When it goes off...PULL OVER and STOP. They wouldn't be the first ones to do that to a PSD......
according to them no lights, temp said normal, they saw a puff of steam and when he let off the accelerator it died and wouldnt crank. now after it cooled it cranks normal and sounds fine but no oil pressure
If it doesn't have any oil pressure....DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE. Right now you might just have a blown head gasket or radiator hose. Keep running it with no oil pressure, not only are you risking the bearings...your destroying the injectors.
w/ no oil pressure these trucks wont start. tomorrow morning im going to pull the filter cap and check for oil while cranking and go from there. I'm hoping it will start and run i had a long hard pull set for Monday.
ok please follow this advise as its easy and will awnser the just how hot was it question.
all you need to do is remove the oil filter (do this when the engine is cold), see if the oil filter standpipe is melted and also check the one way check valve (little button at bottom of filter housing) if they are melted then the engine has gone beyond 350 degrees f. if this is the case shop for an engine. if its still all there then you have some hope.
sorry about the bad news.

Your oil press gauge is measuring LPOP. Your HPOP is firing your injectors. You could very well have no oil pressure on the low side and still run.
im not going to mess with the quote stuff but here it is.
A lack of low side oil pressure can make a crank nostart as the low side is what supplies oil to the high side pump so if pressure is low then that can happen.
Also note that a large leak on the high side system can cause a low side oil pressure concern this is most common on the early build units with the first gen cast iron style pump cover 03-04.25 years. the main reason for this is that the ball pops outta of the hpp. when this happens the truck will start most of the time and have long crank and oil pressure will drop to 0 at idle. however some will just go crank nostart. If this is your case check base after the repair because this also like to cause the low side oil pressure regulator in the front cover to stick.
hope this helps
Im on my way to check it out. and i meant if there was no flow to hpop and you used up what oil was in its reservoir it wont run. Should of went into more detail..

occasionally this truck will crank for 5 to six seconds and wont try to hit until the oil pressure gauge moves?
the low pressure oil pump pressure regulator could be stuck in bypass not allowing the low pressure oil system to build pressure.if it got ran that hot to where the stand pipe is melted then it is tiome for a new engine.you could buy a reman from ford that has a 2 yr unlimited mile warrantty or you could buy a used engine from everdrive.com that comes with a 3 yr unlimited milage warranty.
there is not even a sign of plastic in the oil filter housing.
I'm asuming its in the suction screen or the pump, injectors, jurnels, etc, etc, etc.
i used to be a diesel mechanic so in theory i could rebuild it but i dont know what else it junked.
Not to sound morbid, but if you do tear it down for a rebuild...anyway we could talk you into posting the photos? Okay, yeah it's quite morbid...but I find the photos/videos of stuff like that interesting.
