Pinion bearing

Hey folks, any suggestions are welcome. Have an '01 Exp with a 3.55 Trac-Lok, 192,000 miles. A whine in the pinion bearing started 500 miles ago, it increases/decreases with acceleration/deacceleration, is steady and makes no other noise (clunking, chatter). I changed the gear oil (75-140 with friction add) but no relief. Short of replacing the bearing, would 80-90 gear oil help? Also, any mileage estimates before failure? Thanks.

Read this thread, but pay attention to the first paragraph of post #8. His pinion nut was loose before he even touched it. This might be the case with you as well. If your's is loose you might be able to simply torque it down to the 160 ft. lbs. and the noise could go away.

Thanks, the pinion nut was overtightened so we backed it off and reset at 160 ft/lbs. Whine was reduced by half or more but is still there.

I would have to guess that all of the bearings in that rear end are worn and loose. Short of a full rebuild, you probably can not eliminate the noise. The pitfall of waiting to do it, assuming you plan to keep the truck for a while, is that when you finally are forced to do it because of a failure, you may have ruined the gearset as well.

It could definately last quite a bit longer as is. The one in my work truck has a little whine and 255,000 miles on it.

Thanks Big Greenie...I plan on keeping it for quite a while and will have work done soon. It's been whining for about 900 miles so the sooner the better.

I wouldn't worry about it. My wife has been whining for the better part of 15 years now and she's showing no sign of quitting anytime soon.

Thanks for the laugh, needed it. Glad you're still together. Mine whined for ten years then left me with four kids (her name wasn't Lucille). Had a beautiful '68 Olds 442 and I still say I traded in my 4 speed for 4 kids (they're worth it).

Damn, some guys get all the luck! I've offered to pack her suitcase and buy her a one-way bus ticket, but she just won't leave.
