Fuel Tank Selector Valve
just getting this truck, and not knowing any better,i thought i had an electric fuel pump because i could clearly hear it running.
well,it wasn't a pump at all.what's been running straight ahead was the fuel tank selector valve.
first question= why so loud, and why run at all? shouldn't it only "buzz" a little or something when switching tanks?
what got me to look, was that while i was filling(engine running) the truck stalled and would not start again.towed it back home.
why did the engine stall?
i also noticed that when i went to crank it over the second time,i could no longer here (what i still thought at the time-the fuel pump) the FSV.
shortly after, when i tried the third time to start it,i heard the loud buzzing coming from the FSV again.though still wouldn't start.
so.my theory,is that by adding more fuel,i loosened up gunk in the tank, that has been sitting for who knows how long.
so i put a new fuel filter on it.(i didnt want to replace the filter yet, because i figured i will probably plug up the new one until my tanks are clean.but, what the heck lol.figure i'l just clean it out latter, and not knowing the past history on the one in there,id avoid scratching my head if it was just really bad to start with)
of course, not knowing yet, that i didn't have an electric fuel pump,i turned the key forward and let the little ""buzzer" fill the filter-i wanted to see if it would.
now,of course i know what it is,after examining it,so tomorrow i will fill the new filter-as of course, its not going to prime itself with the mechanical pump, least of course not easy lol and see if it starts.
so.do i need a new FSV? i mean, these things should not be loud nor run constant correct?
any more info or tips in light of this new info for me,is greatly appreciated.
this truck has been off road for a long time.
thanks!
yea man sounds like it bit the dust. advance and autozone have them for about a hundred bucks. they sell an a/c delco (
chevy parts on a ford!)one with a conversion plug that requires splicing. i cant remember if they have the exact replacement one or not? if i recall the dealer was a bit higher for the oem piece and had to order it so i just went aftermarket because im not afraid to solder.
There should be a short ZIIIP as the internals switch tanks...... if they switch, then the tank fuel level will be applicable to the new tank selected.
88-98 the FSV's are the same, I got mine at the wreckers....from a gasser.
the rear tank on my 96 is rusted out,and don't care if i rob it before it sells.
would the FSV be the same on the 96 f150 with 300/i6 by any chance?
so,iv got enough to do right now,so i just blew through and figure out which lines where still open.
sure enough the rear tanks valves where open.so i just connected the lines to the front-full tank.
filled the fuel filter-charged the batteries while i took into ripping apart the front end(replacing the 16 yr old rusted out u-joints-yeah fun lol.but no different than doing the d44 on my 150 really, other than i needed a new socket.)stopping every once in awhile to turn her over,to prime.
took three or four 10-20 second tries and she fired right up.(pausing for like 30-40 mins in between.plenty of time on my hands while getting axle/u-joints out lol.
i didn't plug the wires back up to the FSV,so i guess that= no fuel gauge.
i guess i dont care right now and will prob go with the auto zone universal and splice the wires.no biggie imho to do this and save some green over oem.
so seems the FSV burnt up.(thus the noise) and stopped my truck from running.-future searchers tip.
