4x4 not engaging

4x4 not engaging
There are a lot of threads on this but here's something that might narrow it down from the GEM, dif motor, switch etc. When I turn the 4wd switch to 4 high (in park, brake on) nothing happens. No click, no dash light, nothing. Same thing for 4 lo in N brake on. If I turn the truck off and put the switch to 4h and start the truck the light will come on and 4wd will engage and it will be fine for a few times and then stop working again. During this time it will also engage in 4 lo like it's supposed to. I'm thinking the motor is going and not the GEM unit.
Thoughts? As usual your help is appreciated.

the 4wd is not suposed to be ingaged until the truck is shifted into neutral. idk why but my dad does it and my grandpa does it none of their 4wd have ever had any problem, try putting it in neutral and see if it helps

When it's working properly 4H engages on the fly but I choose not to because it can bend the fork in the transfer case and actually had to have it repaired because of engaging on the fly. 4H also engages in park when working properly or at least it always has before. Also I tried Park, Neutral, Drive, still nothing until I shut off the truck put it in 4H, Park, brake on and start it.

No Worries. I finally found a thread with the same symptoms and it sounds like the transfer case motor. Thanks for the reply though.

FYI the Transfer case motor was the problem. Real tough to diagnose as the problem was so intermittent. Thanks all for the help.
