Vehicle: 2003 Ford F-250, 6.0, single alternaor system
Problem: I have been through 3 alternators with the same problem, batteries are new as of May 2009. When I start the engine I get a voltage reading of about 9-11.5 volts, for about 3-5 minutes (driving or at idle) then the voltage jumps to 13-14 volts. This is not a gradual rise in volts, it is like the alternator doe not charge then suddenly starts charging. I have talked with a local automotive electric shop and they are lost on the issue.
By the way, this happens when it is cold or hot. Doesn't matter of the engine has been running for an hour then turned off and turned abck on, same actions and this problem id draining my batteries.
The voltage drop is your glow plugs. They come on everytime you start the engine regardless of temp. When they turn off you are at full charge voltage. Glow plugs are pure resistance and your symptoms are normal.
