Transmission/Carb questions for an 84 302.

I have been doing a good bit of work to my truck and I am at an odd point. I bought a 4 barrel intake and carb off of craigslist. Its an older Carter AFB intake which is basically a Edlebrock intake. I have the 302/AOD combo but I am curious if anyone has hooked up one of these to an AOD with the kick down rod instead of the cable? I was thinking of replacing the transmission with a C4, woudl this be a good idea?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

from what i've gathered the AOD tranny needs the TV cable to operate correctly & if it's not adjusted properly you will hurt the tranny. it would help if you let these guys know what kind of work you do with your truck that way they can give you the best advise!!

I have an AOD in my truck which has actually given me no serious problem in the time I've owned it (& with a 351w transplant too), but they are not a strong transmission - I treat it pretty gently.
They can be rebuilt with a big range of modifications to handle high power but at a high cost.
The C4 is only a 3 speed but a more durable transmission.
Your intended use & budget will be the big factors in deciding which way to go.

I am more or less only going to be using this truck as a sport truck. I do not plan on hauling any loads with the exception of some furniture here and there. I just want a quick truck as my daily driver.

My truck has the metal rod which connects the carb to the transmission. It does not have the cable set up. Would it be in my best interest to swap over to the cable if thats possible?

well you know i'm doing the exact same thing to my 84 F-150 long bed. when i get back from thin deployment i'm having a rebuilt 308 block with gt40 heads, a mild rv cam, shorty headers, flowmaster muffler(single in & dual outlets) Edlebrock intake, & a 1406 carb. i'll be using a C4 tranny with 3.08 gears. i haven't figured out if i need a stall coverter yet but, that's what i'm going to be doing!! just like you lite hauling no towing!!!
if it's an aod tranny and you want to keep it make the swap to the TV cable....

I think I will hit up Pull A Part and get myself a cable. I am not set on keeping the AOD or swapping it out. I just want the truck working right now. Fuel Mileage would be nice, but I would much rather the truck be peppy. I just want opinions on the route I should go. Thanks!
