BMW huh? As my perpetually-broke, 540 driving brother-in-law says: "B M Troubleyou". Great cars. Great performance. Great durability, for the most part. Great costs to repair when needed.
I miss driving my Audi, I do not miss owning it.
Gee, who else can I bash? I just remember my brother paying $850 for an alternator for his Volvo T5 wagon. I had to buy one for the Econoline at the same time. $34. And until you actually had to look at it, get in it, ride in it, drive it, accelerate in it, corner, or stop, that Econoline had it all over that Volvo.
That what you're talking about?
Got a Chevalay motor in that '62? That'll get the discussion going!
German cars used to be durable and easy to work on, even if parts are expensive. Now they are "lease queens" because all the mechanical superiority doesnt mean crap when the electronics fry right after the warranty is up.
The 1992 325i (e36 chassis with m50 engine) was a great car right up to about 150,000 miles, so I think it gave us good service. The only things that gave trouble more than once were the cooling system and power window switches. The thing was efficient partly because it was designed to be constantly on the verge of overheating. Other than that the engine was an absolute jewel, and very easy to maintain, being a straight six in a RWD car.
