How NOT to lower your truck.

I recently bought a mangled '75 F100 for the disc brakes and rear end. During the removal of the rear end I noticed a lot of side to side play and decided to do a little investigating. Here is what I found:

The PO had torched out the rivets on the forward leaf spring shackles and raised them in an attempt to lower the truck but instead of pushing the shackles up against the frame before welding them back on he left over a half inch gap, enough for me to stick my hand behind! To make matters worse the bead was only about 3 inches long and cracked the entire length. A few good kicks and it broke off.

-and he was going to make this a "race truck".

Wow! Thanks for the great lowering tip!!!

If I don't have a welder, will epoxy work?

It couldn't be any worse than this. Just be sure to run a few drywall screws through it while the epoxy cures.

I'm gonna pick up some JB Weld on the way home. I, of course, already have the duct tape and drywall screws. I think it'll bond well using the screws and the tape. Might just leave the screws in for that extra bit of strength not that I'll need it though!

What about taking a leaf out of the rear and re-binding it with bailing wire?

Can you imagine if P.O. built a roll cage? Did he? If so that would be priceless.

A short while back I was looking at a "race car" with a home made roll cage made by the brother of P.O.(see first post) both being master engineers and metal fabricators. This cage was built using 1" muffler tubing and spliced together using a nut and bolt. There was some wire used I just don't recall for what.
If I only had my camera with me at the time.<!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- sig -->

wire ties, the big ones, or a lot of the little ones joined together, maybe tie down straps? Heck, just use rope, that way you can change the height whenever you want

I hear it's easy to fab a roll cage out of PVC.

Muffler tubing? Fancy!... Couldn't he just have gotten by like the rest of us? With some cardboard paper towel tubes, a bottle of Elmer's glue, and a can of silver spray paint?

I saved the paper towel tubes for my cold air intake. Gives it the rich throaty sound.
