cold start-

my van is 1978 e-100 v8 -

when it is cold out- (below 50*F) I have to press the gas pedal to the floor - hold for a second or two-release the pedal- then start it- sometimes i have to do that twice to get it to fire up-

if it gets really cold, (below 40-especially W/Fog) it starts as mentioned above but idles way lopy like the whole engine is out of whack like an unbalanced washing machine- if i manage to get it to warm up like that then it levels out and runs like a champ-?

any ideas?

is it a temp sensor or auto choke thing? is gas not getting to the carb on start up- improper float level?

I am assuming that you have a carb fuel system. When it gets colder outside, it is normal to press the gas pedal, and even pump the pedal a few times, to set the choke and the fast idle cam on the carb. It may run lopy for a few minutes but it shold level out.

Carb. engines are a whole new ballgame compared to fuel injected engines.
You didn't sayif you had an electric choke or an engine heat choke assembly. If you have an eletric choke, you could have a defective heating unit in the assembly. If your not sure how to tell I can give you some help. Let me know.

i'm not sure what kind of choke it is, i,ve been trying to figure it out, there is no choke pull ****-

i only know harley's so that is my engine reference point- i am still learning about cars and this van is my first big vehicle-

i looked all over the carb and couldnt find a lever or cable that would indicate a choke-

how do i tell if it has an electric choke? it would make sense theres a faulty temp sensor, since it starts up perfectly first try when warm or in the sun for a few hours-

Is there a round or square box on the top side of the carb near the butterfly pivot point?

Single or double wires leading to it with spade connectors?

If so, you have a electric choke system, even so, it can be bad, or adjusted ...

yeah i see something like that- its round- clearly visible from the front under the hood-

i will try and post a photo soon-

thanks for pointing me into this direction- i will look into how it works, can be tested/replaced, etc.

could it be hooked up to one of those custom fuel mixture ratio gages? or does it just measure temperature?

As a heads up I have a 78 E150, and on mine, it's three presses on the gas, then let up, and it will firea right up without any further assistance. Just have to fdeather the throttle after it starts to keep it running until it warms up, but that's because the choke is a bit messed up on mine. Might want to give it a shot.

yeah same here- i,m going to try and fix it- because i want to learn about the van-

it seems like a common problem, though not sure how it would contribute to engine wear and tear if at all-

temp sensors are cheap on kragen anyway-

i,ll post the solution when/if i can fix it-

Well it should be fairly trivial to convert to a manual choke, which could help. Certainly more reliable, but then it's extra stuff you still have to mess with each time you start it.

i like that idea- a manual choke-

after-all, i already own a temp sensor- its in my BRAIN.

i will look into how to go about doing that-

the simpler the better-

Should be able to pickup a manual choke kit at the local auto parts store. It's generally as simple as locating where you want the slide lever, drilling a hole for it and mounting it, then at the carb end, disconnect the electric choke actuator from the choke and hook up the manual end in it's place, then mount the casing for the manual to the carb or intake or something and you're done. Should be a 20 minute install or so.

wow, that sounds perfect, I,m going to do that tomorrow, see if it helps, and happily eliminate needless complexity from the van-

also have you had engine knocking problems with your '78?

how did you fix it?

mine knocks only when i accelerate slowly at highway speeds- between 50 and 80 mph,

if i floor the gas pedal, it doesn't knock, and if i let up on the gas it doesn't knock- but if i accelerate slowly anywhere between 50 and 80mph- it knocks like crazy.

its also getting worse i think-

is it carbon build up or worn parts that make it knock?

choke installed great by the way- Van fires right up now cold or hot-
