I'm in the process of pulling the old 400 engine out of my 77 f150 becasue next spring a 460 is going in there. But i have a small problem, i have all the pulleys, bolts, and wires off but i don't know how to pull the engine away from the tranny. I know the engine has to come forward about 3/4 to an inch so the tranny and alignment dowels can come lose but how do you do that with the motor mount bolts still trough the frame perches? Do you have to pull the engine up a little and take the mounts off the block?
I have no idea on this one. I'd just pull the tranny too that way I can have the tranny rebuilt and install a shift kit too. Maybe even clean it and paint it before it goes back in.
Not sure you should being doing an engine swap with your experience yet. BUT you got to learn sometime. Here goes.
1---On bottom side of frame perchs there is a nut holding the motor mounts to perchs. Take them off both sides.
2---At back of oil pan on front of tranny there is a small plate. Take it off, there are 4 nuts that hold torque converter to flywheel, take all four of them off.
3---There should be a couple of bolts that hold the bigger part of the Block Plate they call it to the tranny. take them out.
I don't take starter off till you use it to turn engine over to pull torque converter nuts--you can use the front of engine to turn the engine over.
4---Pull starter.
5---Get on the back side of the tranny looking forward. There are 6 bolts that hold tranny to block( 5/8" socket) I use a flex it works better. pull all of them out.
6---If you have all the hoses and gas lines and stuff on top unhooked. engine is ready to be lifted up till the studs on motor mounts clear perchs-- then pull forward and should come loose from tranny.
All this is assuming it is an automatic. I looked at your pics in it followed me home. Looks like auto shifter. Any questions don't hesitate to ask. Can't learn if you don't ask. Bruce
I like these threads. I've only pulled one engine. I didn't know any better so I pulled the whole thing and let my cousin seperate the engine and tranny. I usually "supervise" haha
Like I said you can't learn if you don't ask. Be happy to help any time I can. Currently looking for a job. Been laid off since March. I would go back to wrenching but this old body can't handle it any more. Bruce
7--Forgot to mention taking the exhaust pipes off the manifolds.
Thanks for the job lead Woodgrain. most of those jobs are to far from home to drive and I am to old to relocate. I do check them out though on a regular basis. Bruce
ok moose 4x4 i already have the nuts off through the frame perches like i said i have all the bolts of and by the way there are 8 bolts holding the tranny to the block, don't doubt my experience this maybe my first engine swap but i have rebuilt the 460 myself. All i need to know is how the engine seperates from the tranny not the whole process becasue thats already done. yes its a 400M with a C6 tranny im located in SD
get the torque converter nuts off under the plate on tranny at back off the oil pan. and it should come apart with a little upward and forward tugging. I did not mean any disrespect. Like I said you got to ask to learn. Bruce
ok but i was just a little afended since i already said i had all the bolts off, so your saying that theres no need to bring the engine forward just lift it up till the bolts come out of the frame perches and then pull forward?
