I'd like to get a bed mat for my '73 F250, but the 3/8" bed mat from the LMC catalogue is only advertised to fit '74-'79. I called them but the lady on the phone had no helpful information as to why. I saw on another forum someone mention that the wheel wells are slightly different on the '73 bed... anyone know if the LMC bed mat will indeed fit? Or know of another quality bed mat that fits the '73 specifically?
Many thanks.
Just thought I would ask if you have already or are going to coat the bed in paint or roll on/ spray on bed liner of some sort? The bed mat will trap mositure/water under it.
I wasn't originally planning on it. LMC claims that their bed mat stays dry and protects the paint itself, though perhaps it doesn't work that well? My bed is also a bit rusty already, so I figured a bed mat would protect stuff hauled in the bed from scraping off rust while at the same time making the truck look a little sharper until I can afford a new paint job.
Which company? I wonder how snugly it fits around the wheel wells, and why LMC is so year-specific...
As for the plastic bedliner, WoodGrain, how do you remove it from the 90s truck and then install in the dentside?
I had A Allstar under rail plastic bedliner in my 1976 F-150 longbed. The part number is #2020763 with tailgate protector part number #0130640. Allstar has it listed to fit 1974-1996 Ford F-Series Trucks.

I just yanked it out of the donor truck. There may have been little plastic screws or something cheasy holding it in. Didn't really put up a fight.
Then when I put it in the Dent, it dropped right in. It kinda just snapped in under the bed rails. Doesn't move at all.

Thats why I wonder what's different about the '73 bed. National Parts Depot has a 3/8" bed mat, F-011216-4, on page 214 of their online catalogue, listed to fit '73-'79, so I wonder if it's a mistake that they list '73 or if it will fit a '73 poorly. They also list the longbed version as less expensive than the shortbed version, so tough to trust their attention to detail.
WoodGrain, the plastic is an intriguing option...

I see you live in Davis, go into the local Les Schwab Tire Center and they can order you the mat. Our listing also says 74 and up. I talked to our purchasing guys and they said the store could order it and if it doesn't fit, simply send it back. They saw no reason why it wouldn't work on a 73. If you're interested, let me know and I'll have my buddy Tim (manager or Davis Les Schwab) order it for you. I manage one of the Les Schwabs in Santa Rosa.
Hey Cruiser, If all your ordering is a rubber mat, then lay it in see if it fits. If not cut it with razor knife. It isn't really a big deal. Its like cutting an insole to match your boot or cutting carpet to fit.
The plastic bed "mat" is pretty good. Impact and petroleum resistant. I'm using it temporarily until i can repaint the bed and restore it.
Hey Cruiserofland, I lost your visitor message somehow but here goes. Les Schwab's mat is 3/8 in thick I believe. They are made by a company that we sell our retread plants rubber shavings to. $110.36 plus tax. Let me know if your interested and I can have Tim in Davis order one for you. Shipping is free and there's no obligation to buy if it doesn't fit right. Don't see any reason why it wouldn't though.

Hey jhooch,
Sorry for the delayed response. I think your option is the way to go, but I'm going to have to wait until at least the next paycheck. I will definitely let you know. Does les Schwab also sell a tailgate mat? I'd like to do both and it'd be nice if the two matched, but I can always get the LMC tailgate mat if nothing else.
Looking at pictures, it looks like the driver's side bump in the bed for the fuel system might be different between '73 and '74-'79, though the wheel wells may be slightly different, too. Either way, I can try the Les Schwab mat and possibly cut it to fit, so we'll see.
I am most likely going to do the 90's bed liner thing for my 1977. But the bed mat is not a bad idea either. My uncle bought a brand new Dodge Ram in 1985. He put around 340,000 miles on it. He's a carpenter so it saw lots of use and always sat outside. The mat is still on the truck and if you look under the mat the paint on the floor of the bed looks brand new so I would not worry about it holding water and causing rust.
