on my 94 f150 i have a 2 to 4 inches of play in the steering wheel. it does have power steering. when driving i have to hold the wheel to the left to keep it straight and from time to time it will wander on the road when driving and i will have to move the wheel left to right to keep it centered. when i am backing into a stall the wheel will counter steer really well, but when i am driving and make a left or right turn i will have to manually counter steer the wheel back to center. i saw on the steering box there is a screw and a lock nut on there. does anyone know what that is. i was thinking it would help out with the steering but was not sure and didn't want to mess with it. when driving on the highway it gets spooky sometimes and scary when driving next to 18 wheelers. need help with this please don't want to end up in a ditch and lose my truck. thanks to all for the feed back.................. p.s. can i rebuild the steering box to save money rather than buying a new one??

i think the play in the steering wheel is caused from a snap ring that goes over the upper bearing in the steering column just behind the turn signal switch. that's what fixed the play in my truck...the rest could be a bad ball joint or just alignment outta whack from possibly hitting a curb, a lift or putting bigger tires on it
your alignment sounds out of whack, and btw up to 3 inches of play in the steering is legal, 6 inches in anything over a 1 ton. "play" is normally caused by rotating the steering wheel intil it won't turn anymore, the powersteering pump is a hydrolic pump and will continuously try and force the wheels to turn, overtime things start to wear, and the gears inside the gear box for your steering wheel give before the spindles ever will, resulting in play like this, hope this helps
