2000 5.4L Exp. engine start problem

Hello fellow enthusiasts -

Had a problem today w/ the wife's 2000 5.4L Exped.
that I have not seen before. It's got about 31,000
miles w/ no problems to-date, but this AM she went to
start it and it ran for like 1-2 seconds and died (just
shut off). Happened 4 times in a row until I told her to
hang on a minute. Spark and all vacuum lines/battery/starter
all in great shape. Plenty of gas in the tank.

Come to find out after climbing in and trying it myself,
she was never pressing on the gas to feather in some
fuel to the engine (not that she should have to).

When I questioned her, she said she always
starts it w/o pressing on the gas. Which, I guess, should
be fine in most cases. Anyway, I got it to fire right up
on the first crank when pressing on the gas a little. Been running
fine all day since then.

So, is this anything to be concerned about, or is it just
a it-happens-sometimes-type-of-thing?

For reference, my '01 F250 with 33K miles fires off 1st time
everytime w/o pressing the gas as well.

I think I need to replace the Exped. fuel filter asap. Any
other tips?

Same thing on wife's 99 expy. Idle Air control Valve.
there is a post on the 4.6/5.4 engine section I saw that
covered this. Cleaned valve, works great. Shop wanted $186 , dealer wanted $60 for new valve, cleaned it myself for $4 (can of throttle body cleaner). cheap is good.

Thanks Ford Fan! I will clean that sucker this weekend.
Ya know, I seem to recall this same IAC issue
coming up in the SUper Duty forums as well.... hmmmmm
maybe an overall F*rd maintenance item for their trucks
to keep on top of. Anyway, much appreciate the feedback!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-02 AT 08:28 PM (EST)]Same thing happened to me an hour ago in my 98 4.6.Ran fine yesterday,went to start it and it would not start.I tryed four times w/o foot on gas pedal,didnt start.Pressed pedal to floor and it started right up and ran fine after holding engine at 1500rpm for 10 secs or so.It normally starts w/o gas pedal as all efi should.You guys saved me from having to post this same problem.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-02 AT 09:37 PM (EST)]Same here, bought a '99 5.4 EB on a Friday night got up Sat. morning and no startie, finally got it to run about 200 rpm in limp mode got out, started tapping on sensors, tapped on the iac and BAM the engine came to life. Mine was pretty hard to replace, good luck

Thanks everyone. Seems this is more common than I thought.
I am going to see if the dealer will replace the IAC
under warranty; otherwise I will clean it myself.

I've got the same problem - 199 Expy 5.4L - doesn't happen too often, though. I'm ready to replace the IAC when the time comes.

2000 5.4L Exp. engine start problem

I have taken the IAC valve off a 4.6L before and cleaned it-- easy to get to and makes a world of difference in idle performance. But, the IAC on my 5.4L is located on the back of the throttle body. I know they are 8mm bolts, and I can get to the top one, but the bottom is partially blocked by the manifold. What are you using to tackle the lower bolt?

Best item is a 1/4 air rachet with swivel. Watch for gasket, when you put the gasket back on do it while you've got the iac in hand...

Took the wife's Expy. in this week to the local dealer and
explained the rough idle/hard start problem to them and they
agreed and replaced the IAC under warranty. Running smooth
again - thanks for the help guys.
