I posted here a few weeks ago about a blow-out I had on the freeway which ripped out the wiring for my ABS and did some body damage to my truck. (it was the right front tire that blew while on the freeway) I got the truck back from the shop last week, but now I'm having misc electrical problems pop up. Specifically:
the truck alarm sets (well, it beeps like it's set when I push the button) but it doesn't go off if you open the door;
the cigarette lighter and other power socket work intermittantly,
the 4WD no longer works (found this one out when I really needed it unfortunately).
My question is: Could all this be a result of the blow-out? The truck did shake pretty violently when the tire blew. Also, when I checked the fuse box, alot of the fuses were kind of askew. There were no blown fuses that I could see and I pushed them all back in snugly but still have the above issues.
If it's possible that something could have been damaged or shaken loose when the tire blew, then I'll head back to the shop that did the repairs. If it's just coincidence that these are all failing now (and just my rotten luck, harump) then I'll take it in to my regular mechanic.
Melanie, I don't have the answer but will give you a bump up. You might check the previous page re: "electrical gurus" and get some ideas? Best of luck, Carroll

the cigarette lighter and other power socket work intermittantly, I have the same problem, believe it to be a issue withthe plug itself, certain items work, others dont. See if the same applies

Thanks everyone, I appreciate any advice.

Hopefully at least one of these will work for you, Good Luck
Thanks for your suggestions! I actually did check the battery connections and tried a couple different things in the socket. I didn't, however, check for holes in the vacuum line! I'll do that next.

Thank you for the bump and the heads up on the previous post! (I usually do a search first, but didn't this time )
The blow out could definitely have taken out the vacuum line to your Electronic Shift-On-the-Fly (ESOF) auto-locking hub. No vacuum means no engagement of that hub.
Check fuse number 3, see if it is fitting there tight, it should be a 20 amp fuse, it controls the cigarret lighter, as well as the "data link" power. I do not know where the alarm is pulling power from, but this makes sense to me.. until you tell me it doesnt work, then I try again..

All good ideas so far. When you say the 4WD "no longer works", is it just the hubs or the transfer case too? Do you hear/feel the t-case shift into 4hi and 4lo? Does your ventilation go to defrost for a bit when you into or out of 4wd? It could easily be a vacuum line that was damaged. Also, your vacuum pump, reservoir and solenoid are all pretty much above the passenger side wheel well too.
I'm not sure how all the signals are routed through the wiring harnesses, but your alarm module is under your dash and the horn should be mounted on the driver's side of your firewall (my OEM is mounted there). The cigarette lighter is hard to tell, but could easily just be coincidental. It could also be a disturbed connection or fuse too (intermittent faults are the worst!).
My alarm has gone screwy on me in the past (arms/disarms for no apparent reason) and I pulled all my battery cables off for an hour or so then reconnected everything. This will reset the all of the computers...and the alarm. It's worked for me in the past (twice that I can remember) and the best part is it's free (as long as you remember all of your radio presets)!
I've done all my own work so I can't recommend a good shop down here in San Diego, but I go to El Cajon Ford for any parts or questions.
Good Catch Brian!!! I didn't even think of asking about the transfer case, I just kinda thought hose, based on the tire.. But I agree, I should have asked that first..
Wow, I love this message board!!! Thank you all for your help!
Brian - Regarding the 4WD: I'm not sure exactly how to answer your question regarding the hubs or transfer case. I found out it wasn't working when trying to get out of a really small gully. My front tires were on hard pack doing nothing (not spinning at all) and my back tires were spiinning away kicking up silt.
Thanks for the tip about the alarm. I'll try disconeccting the battery cables and see if that takes care of it.
Drew Ford is where I took it to have the body repaired. I'd actually forgotten about El Cajon Ford, though they did some work for me many moons ago. Just Another Truck - I did check fuse #3 and, while it was one of the fuses that was askew, it wasn't blown. I made sure that all the fuses were sitting snugly (?) but still had no power to the power plugs. Pop - I'll be sure that the shop checks this when I take it back. I had a feeling that it would be something like this; thank you.
I'm going to take the truck back tomorrow. I'll post here what they are able to find out for me.
