Might be the PCM is not advancing the timing?
Does it all the time, We checked timing on a computer, seemed to be advancing according to that, but thats what we were thinking to.

Unless there's a bunch of carbon build up coming loose when you rev the engine, black smoke indicates burning oil.

When's the last time you've run some fuel system cleaner thru it?

^^That's what I would've said. Fuel filter and Sea Foam. Maybe try tapping some injectors with a long socket extension and a hammer...

We are thinking that the timing is not advancing when you rev it up fast. We are going to try a different module on the fender that controls the spark/fuel. Cant remember what the heck it was called. The black smoke is from it running rich when it acts up, cause its only running on like 4 cylinders.

Black smoke indicates a RICH CONDITION. Not burning oil. BLUE smoke indicates burning oil. White smoke or Steam indicates water.

I don't know if they still have the SPOUT on that version of truck, but you might try removing it if it does. Does that make any difference? No, then it might be no spark advance. That could be a problem with the stator in the distributor.

The SPOUT is removed so that the PCM doesn't advance the timing while you're trying to set the timing.

Its the little plug you pull out I assume. Yep, he pulled that when he checked the timing.

It sounds a lot like a bad fuel pressure regulator. If the diaphragm inside the fuel pressure regulator is ruptured, manifold vacuum will suck fuel out of the fuel rail past the leaky diaphragm causing a really rich condition and improper fuel pressure. Try unplugging the vacuum hose from the regulator and see if the problem improves.

Black smoke out of the tail pipe is a dead ringer for a rich condition. And it's a classic symptom of a faulty fuel pressure regulator.
