I will double check the fuel filter, but IM sure its not the problem. It does put out some black smoke when it acts up too. I think its down too, pcm problem, wiring, injector??????
We are thinking that the timing is not advancing when you rev it up fast. We are going to try a different module on the fender that controls the spark/fuel. Cant remember what the heck it was called. The black smoke is from it running rich when it acts up, cause its only running on like 4 cylinders.
I don't know if they still have the SPOUT on that version of truck, but you might try removing it if it does. Does that make any difference? No, then it might be no spark advance. That could be a problem with the stator in the distributor.
It sounds a lot like a bad fuel pressure regulator. If the diaphragm inside the fuel pressure regulator is ruptured, manifold vacuum will suck fuel out of the fuel rail past the leaky diaphragm causing a really rich condition and improper fuel pressure. Try unplugging the vacuum hose from the regulator and see if the problem improves.
Black smoke out of the tail pipe is a dead ringer for a rich condition. And it's a classic symptom of a faulty fuel pressure regulator.
