Reps, good or bad.....

I'm confused about how the rep system works. Sometimes if I try to rep a person I get a pop up that says I have to spread some around before repping this person again.

Why is this?

If I find a post that is helpful or interesting I should be able to give credit where it's due as often as it may occur.

How is the number of rep points given or recieved decided?

I've never negetive repped anyone and I don't believe I've ever been negetive repped, how does this work?

Tim

The spread it around thing is for "fairness". I agree you should be able to give credit where credit is due every time it is due. The number has to do with post counts and reputation the giver and receiver have. There is no published equation about this as far as I know. I don't like to negative rep myself although I cannot say I never have. I think rep points are and should be used to show appreciation. The numbers do not overly concern me. All in all 1 million rep points and 1.50 will get you a soda.

Great answer Blue! I tried to rep you for it and got the "message". Tried to rep Tim too and got the same.

Anyways.....Tim, I try to rep people when a post is particularly helpful, they have made an excellent post or point in a post, and so on. I've never really been able to figure the whole rep system out myself. I do think that they are sometimes abused though. I have seen people actually asking for them in threads before which I think is kind of obnoxious.

I have repped you and Blue before and have done so because both of you have made excellent posts and points in various threads and continue to do so. And I will continue to rep for the above mentioned reasons. Weird thing is that neither you nor I have any idea how many points we are giving when we rep people. It would be neat if there was a system in place to let you know how many reps you have available to give out, how many you are giving out when you rep someone, and etc.

Cheers guys!

Thanks John, I was able to rep Blue but I got the "message" when I to rep you. Go figure.

Do we need an overhaul of the rep system? LOL! Everything else is getting looked at.

LOL....I think it would just be better if we had a little better information about how it works. Of course, on the flip side of that, the lack of knowledge probably keeps it from being misused as well. For instance, if everyone knew exactly how the reps were dealt out and to whom in what quantity, it could be really unbalanced and possibly abused.

That said, the reps are nice but I try to help where I can and where I have knowledge regardless of the reps.

The "spread it around" portion of the rep system came about a few years back because folks would get into rep-love fests, just constantly repping each other back and forth.

From what I can tell having watched my own rep grow over the years, there are a few things that affect it. One is the amount of rep a person giving it has--if they have more, they give more. Two, I think (but I'm not sure), that the more people who rep you for a given post increases the amount of rep you would have otherwise gotten from those individuals.

Nothing good comes from neg reps. Usually the folks who are deserving of them will run afoul of the mods/admins anyway, so it's just best not to bother. If you get one from such an individual, just say so, there are usually plenty of folks willing to offset it with positive rep, just don't neg-rep back.

Good points Jason and I remember the rep love fests. Another good point on the negative reps. I have never given negative reps. I may not always agree with someone and I have had run-ins with some whiners in the past but haven't negative repped anyone. It's just the start of a never ending whizzing contest.

Jason is correct.
a few years back there were rep wars going on to see who could get the most rep.
this created a need to overhaul the rep system, and the system in effect now are that you can only give out 4-5 rep per 24 hour period, and you must give out 15 or 20 reps to other people before you can give it to the same person again.

I have never given out a neg. rep.............Been tempted, but its just not going to help anything, like John said, its just going to start a major *&#$%^ match. Conversely I also agree, I have seen excellent posts that deserve rep and I cant because I have to "spread it around"........Frustrating.

Rep is one of those paradoxes that the best way to get it is to give it away!

Agreed 100%. I've never neg. repped anyone but I can tell you for certain that I would be some pissed off if I recieved some neg rep.

Like 99.9% of you, I try to be as helpful as possible, friendly and courteous. I don't tailor my posts looking for reps but, if they come, they make me.

Thanks for all the great explainations.

Hate to say it but this is why I don't use the rep system. It's neat and all, but highly broken. I get some good advice from someone, and I can't rep them. The new rep system I stopped paying attention to. It's like communism, everyone gets an equal share. Except it works on paper, just not in reality. Perhaps if a mod were to bitch-slap the rep-war participants, or 'modify' their code so +1 was actually -1, it might still be useful.
