I own a 2005 F350 Powerstroke diesel 6.0 and I am wondering if anyone else has cleaned out the cat and your truck smokes? I have had my garage look at it and they stated the reason it smokes is due to the hollowed out cat. What do you guys think? Regarding the smoke its a gray smoke smells like diesel fuel. Any ideas?
Thanks much
Friend of mine did a cat delete and no smoke OR smell..... maybe you are burning out the residue. Do you also have a tuner? If so, maybe you ARE running diesel fuel through it.
I dont have one, no problems. Sounds like you have a fueling issue. Sounds like your garage is making excuses to cover the fact they dont know whats wrong.

You might have an injector issue. Cracked, leaking etc injector would cause that issue that you mention. See if you can pull codes, specifically cylinder contribution/balance codes. Those codes will not cause a CEL, so I wouldn't go by rather or not you have a light on.
I noticed i get a slight haze when the truck is cold and the exhaust definetly smells a little stronger than it did when I had the cat on. but once the truck is warmed up no smoke and the smell is noticably less.
Thanks for all your replies. I have had my truck into the garage numerous times with the same answer, They blame it on the cat being hollowed out. In the past my truck has had ten fuel injectors replaced, the last trip to the garage was the crank bearings due to bedplate leak. Its had a FMI module replaced, when the injectors were repaired. I do not run any fuel additives presently. WOuld running additives help the situation. To answer the smoke issue, smoke on start up horrible, noticeable when driving but not as bad as start up. Dont know what to do almost out of warranty. Do not have scanner for codes.
I would take it to a different shop, it definitely sounds like an injector issue. If it only does it at startup, when the engine is cold, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I would find a different shop, if they have continuely blamed a hollowed out cat for this. I can't tell you how many people I know run hollowed out cats and I haven't heard of any one that was smoking that was due to a cat being hollowed.

I would actually wonder if you had the injectors replaced at the same shop, I would wonder about how they installed the injectors and if they did it correctly. If they didn't, a couple of things could happen, but would give you an outward symptoms that you are seeing and smelling.

It depends on what the root cause of it is. If something is broken, cracked etc then no.

Those are the symptoms that I had when I had a leaking injector.

If you are going to keep this truck out of warranty for a good long time(atleast that is the plan), I would highly suggest saving the scratch for a copy of the AutoEnginuity software with the Ford Enhancement bundle. Best bang for your buck. No I don't get commission or work for them in any capacity, I'm just a very satisfied customer with the software. For use DIYs, it is a really good thing to get.
I have no cat. The truck never smoked until recently, now it smokes like a white smoke when pulling away from a stop, its in the shop right now. I called oin friday and apparntly the latest thing Ford is doing is sending an inspector for all oil cooler repairs. This is going to end November 2, then they will be doing the same for injectors.
They wont approve tear down if there is no evidence up high, in the EGR valve, of a coolant leak. As my luck would have it there is none. So I am going to let the truck sit til then and I will get a new oil and egr cooler. Atleast its inside, and the pinion seal was replaced, and the trans serviced.
So like what was stated above make sure you check it for codes, esp. with a grey smoke, you probly have an injector going bad.
