Guys a little insight from the gurus is requested. The other morning I was driving down the freeway at about 80mph and my 4X4 light comes on. The ESOF switch was in 2wd. The light stayed on for about 2 seconds and went out. Keep in mind I have manual hubs so I don't know if the transfer case switched or not.
I wrote it off to a freak occurrence and moved along. Then it happened again the other morning. Then this morning I started up the truck and let it high idle (1300 high idle on the DP) for about 2 or 3 mins and then I headed on down the road in 60E. I got less than 1/4 mile from the house and the truck lost power gradually till it died.
I pulled over, cycled the GPs again and cranked but now start. So I cycled the key a few times and tried again. It cranked and you could tell it was trying to restart but never caught. Gave the GPs a few more cycles and cranked a good 20-25 secs and it finally caught. It bucked and sputtered but finally settled into a normal idle.
But then the the 4X4 light was on again. Switch still in 2wd. I put the truck in drive and headed on down the road. about 200 feet later the 4X4 light went out and all was back to normal.
Any one got any ideas? I am willing to bet the truck dying is clogged screens in the mixing chamber. I have run this truck out of fuel a time or two and below 1/4 tank more times than I care to admit. At 197K they are probably pretty nasty. But the 4X4 thing has me beat.
No codes stored either except for the ones for my driver's side GPs cause my GPCM is bad. Sorry for the long post . Just trying to give as much info as possible.
well your screens might be fine. my truck just hit about 220,000 and i did the hutch & harpoon about 250 miles ago is all. i ran my truck empty once but ran it on fumes a million times(under 1/4 tank). so i was expecting the screens to be messed up to but they weren't. they had a little bit of stuff in them but i would have to say that they were still 95% clean as a whistle.
The dieing and not starting and then starting like crap sounds like you picked up some air in the line... The 4x4 light thing is whats got me confused.....
Yeah, that's odd. The slowly dieing part sounds like a fuel issue for sure. I had the same thing happen when I got bad fuel that plugged up my pre-pump filter. I don't have a 4wd, so no input there.
I did get fuel somewhere different this week. I am down to about a half a tank. Should I top it off with the good stuff and some DK or should I try to finish this tank out first?
Defrost vents still working? can you cycle the A/C controls and change the flow of air? If so then your vacuum system should be fine. I would start by crawling under the truck and looking at the transfer case electrical connection and make sure it is seated correctly.
BTW Robin, What is the large silver electrical terminal on your firewall behind the fuse box?

My truck didn't come with trailer tow package and I added that solenoid to supply battery charge voltage for the fifth wheel I no longer have. Takes the place of relay #39. It's just like an old Ford starter relay. It's most likely more durable then one of the plug in relays that come with the tow package.

10-4, thanks for the identification..... Just wanted to make sure that you hadn't added some unknown performance mod that you did not let us know about.
Besides, I wouldn't keep secrets from "The Brotherhood".
Gotta love The Brotherhood!
Pete, at which station did you get your fuel? I've run two tankfulls through my truck now from the Chevron station in Castroville and it's been great!
Unfortunately, I couldn't fill up there this morning, before picking my mom up for church, because I didn't have enough left in the tank to get to Castroville. So I had to fill up at the USA Mart on Del Monte, just down from the skating rink.
There is a very noticeable difference between the Chevron diesel and the diesel from the other stations I've filled up at. It's easy for me to tell the difference from tankful to tankful too because I always run my tank down to fumes before filling it up.
Well Stewart, I do believe you were the first to use "The Brotherhood" in reference to .
Well, specifically it was a non-FTE member that used the term when Marv checked out a couple parts for me that the guy was selling. But yeah, it was born from a transaction that Marv helped me out with since the parts being sold, were close-by to him.
