chevy truck problem

When I parked my 2002 v6 silverado, it was running fine. A couple of days later when I tried to start it, it would not start. It acted a little like it was kicking back a little, like timing. I was told it was the battery, so I installed a new battery and changed the spark plus. When I crank it the gauges go back and forth as the engines quits turning for just a moment. Also, black smoke comes out the tailpipe. Looking for some help with this problem...Nomadic

Sounds like an incredibly excessive amount of fuel- How did the plugs look, does it spin over quickly with the plugs out, and what have your day/night temps been while it sat?

Check for spark first. Pull a plug, stick it in the cap, ground the threads against a bolt and have a freind (or even an enemy) turn the key while you eyeball it for proper spark. If you have none, it may be the ignition module, I had one go bad in my 4.3-motored truck at only 47K miles.

The plugs definitely needed to be changed as they were black and had gas on them. It did not look like they had ever been changed. The truck has 88,000 miles on it. The temperatures were moderate, not excessively cold in the 40's and 50's but the weather was damp and has been for about a week. Sunshine yesterday and today.

fire and plugs

The spark seems to be o.k. I pulled a plug and did as suggested by Sandman. It has to be some little thing. At first I attributed it to damp weather, but the sun has been out for a couple of day.

Like I said, I put in a new battery and changed the plugs and tried to look around for loose wires as squirrels have been a problem in the neighborhood for some time....No DICE....found nothing.....Thanks...Nomadic

chevy truck problem

I thought that I would post this just to see if anyone has ever heard of this happening.

The dude that is working on my chevy truck found that the distibutor was froze up. Now I totally believe him, but the thing that I have trouble with is how could this happen while the truck was parked?

When I parked it is was running fine. I did put in a new battery and new spark plugs in an attempt to get it going on the advice of others. I was pretty sure that none of this was the problem.

The dang thing has less than a hundred thousand on it and all I have done to it is drive it. I am wondering if this is a problem that could reoccurr? I totally trust the dude who is working on it, but I am still puzzled as how this could have happened.....Thank in advance for you replies.

By froze up, do you mean the shaft itself was seized in the housing? I've never heard of that, but anything's possible. I bought a new GMC in '93 and since it was my second car, I drove it only a couple times a week. It had less than 47,000 extremely easy miles on it when the ignition module went out. No rhyme or reason sometimes when it comes to cars and trucks...
