poor starting in cold weather

Hi,
I have been going crazy with this thing, 2002 f350 7.3 crewcab. I have tested glow plugs, and all read fine. i have replaced gpr. i have jumped out gpr and verified amp draw to plugs by plugging in harnesses on valve covers one at a time, and amp draw is fine, voltage is getting to plugs. Truck starts fine when plugged in. What am i missing here fellas? From what i am reading the air intake heater relay does not need to be energized to affect starting. What else can i check? A sensor of some kind? I am getting no check engine lights. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim Hugg

I've had a similar problem, after 3 NAPA GPR's in the last year I finally installed a stancor - now my truck starts without being plugged in. Check the voltage to the glow plugs when the relay is energized. I was only getting about 6 with a new NAPA relay - with the Stancor I'm at 10.8 to 11v.

What exactly do you mean by poor starting? Cranks for too many seconds? Motor spins slowly? Lots of white smoke while cranking or after it starts?

It cranks and cranks and cranks. You have to do this about 4 times before it will finally take off and start. Whole truck shudders until it warms up, then everything is fine. Something isnt right, and the starter wont be long for this world if I have to keep getting it going this way.

Any smoke coming out of the tailpipe while it's cranking? If so, how much and what color? What are the outside temps when this is happening? How long has it been since you changed your motor oil? What type and grade of oil are you using? What happens if you ignore the WTS light and turn the key on for 30 seconds (not start), turn it back off, then back on for an additional 30 seconds before trying to crank?

What shape is your starter in? Does it seem to spin plenty fast?
When my starter was getting tired if I didn't cycle the glowplugs several times before I tried to start it was real hard to start and run a little bad for about a minute after it did start.Basically the starter was dragging the batteris down so low it barely had enough voltage to run

Check you voltage on the batteries while you're cranking, If it's much below 11 volts, then it's time for batteries, or at least a good post cleaning.

Try starting the motor as soon as the WTS light goes out.
