Chevy dumped their crate motor program when they went belly-up. Used engines are still available from boneyards.
Yes and outfits like Jasper will supply all the reman engines the market will buy.
I scored a couple of the CFC engines to tear down. When I get to it I'll post some pics of what this " Liquid Glass ' does to them. Both are 300 EFI engines and yes the remains will go back into the pile.
It would be interesting to see how that worked. The problem with "fixing" one, other than the legal issues under the program, would be oil passages I would think.

I would never trust reusing the block or crank due to the potential for the liquid glass to plug oil passages. Heads and other parts may be salvageable.
The legal issues would be hard to prove. Right now it's more profitable for the scrap outfits to cut the engines out rather than crush them with the cars. There isn't a requirement stating CFC engines must be handled differently than other scrap engines so they all go into the same pile.
The volume of the CFC cars is staggering, I work with a local yard, and they had over 5000 of them, they were stacking them on top of each other in the storage areas, standing them on end, anything they could do to find space. The most prevelant vehicle in domestic is the Ford Explorer, there must be 300 in the yard at any given time, next is dodge caravans, jeep cherokees and windstars. There are a lot of NICE trucks going thru here. It'd make you cry to see some of the trucks going in, a 2001 F250 V10 Super Duty, crew cab, new tires and wheels, white, leather interior, truck was spotless, and the most they got was $4500 for it, crying shame, there have been hundreds of suburbans go thru, dodge Rams, 97-98-99 F150s and 250s, most of them in really nice shape. They have so many cars they're only leaving them in the yard for a week before taking them out. The only part they've raised the prices on are the tires, instead of $13 for a tire, they get $35, and a lot of these CFC cars have new tires on them. They're working nights and sundays (which they've never done in the 25 years they've been in business) to cycle these cars thru. They only have 6 months from the end of the CFC program to deal with these cars, then they have to be crushed/shredded. The manager told me that when they sell the tires, the vehicle is paid for, all the rest is profit. There are some really nice trucks in the local yards, the 84 and up guys should be grabbing parts like mad, cause when these are gone, you won't see them again for 15 years (cars seem to run in a 10 - 15 year cycle to get into the yard, trucks 20 to 25) This is really going to skew the numbers on junk cars in a few years. Inside the motors is like glue, it's tough to pull distributors, as they're almost welded to the cams, you have to use a BIG prybar and hammer on a lot of them. A buddy who rebuilds engines flat refuses to even think about touching one of those motors, if you could get one, it's illegal to sell internal engine parts from a CFC car, anything oil circuulates thru can't be sold. Ain't our gummit wunnerful?
Maybe some of you saw the newspaper article that was ran a couple of weeks ago pertaining to some the vehicles that were turned in as "clunkers". About 97 Vettes, a couple of Lambo's, some MB's, and a bunch of other nice rides. Wonder if these made the boneyard.

I didn't see any Vettes or Lambos but I did see several Mercedes, Beemers and Audis. Also saw a couple of Jaguars. They all made it into the yard. A man once said to me and I quote " The crusher has no conscience ".
And now it comes out that 2/3's of the CFC's would have been bought that period anyhow. So the tab for the gov came to 24,500 $ PER CAR. If there is a next CFC, I will take advantage of some of that guvment money.
Why?? And put our kids or grandkids (if you have any) in more debt?? It doesn't make sense for the guvment to spend $24,000 per car just to get someone to buy a car. Wouldn't it be cheaper just to give you the car??
I received this as an e-mail. True?? Not sure but it makes sense to me. We do have some smart people in here and they can cipher better than I......
Our government leaders wouldn't lie and manipulate the facts that way. . . would they???
Did you buy a new car in the "CASH FOR CLUNKERS" program????
If you traded in a clunker worth $3500, you get $4500 off for an apparent "savings" of $1000.
However, you have to pay taxes on the $4500 come April 15th (something that no auto dealer will tell you). If you are in the 30% tax bracket, you will pay $1350 on that $4500.
So, rather than save $1000, you actually pay an extra $350 to the feds. In addition, you traded in a car that was most likely paid for. Now you have 4 or 5 years of payments on a car that you did not need, that was costing you less to run than the payments that you will now be making.
But wait, it gets even better: You also got ripped off by the dealer.
For example, every dealer in Los Angles was selling the Ford Focus with all the goodies including A/C, auto transmission, power windows, etc for $12,500 the month before the "cash for clunkers" program started.
When "cash for clunkers" came along, they stopped discounting them, and instead sold them at the list price of $15,500. So, you paid $3000 more than you would have the month before. (Honda, Toyota , and Kia played the same list price game that Ford and Chevy did).
So lets do the final tally here:
You traded in a car worth: $3500
You got a discount of: $4500
---------
Net so far +$1000
But you have to pay: $1350 in taxes on the $4500
--------
Net so far: - $350
And you paid: $3000 more than the car was selling for the month before!
----------
Net total: - $3350
We could also add in the additional taxes (sales tax, state tax, etc.) on the extra $3000 that you paid for the car, along with the 5 years of interest on the car loan but lets just stop here.
So, who actually made out on the deal? The feds collected taxes on the car along with taxes on the $4500 they "gave" you. The car dealers made an extra $3000 or more on every car they sold along with the kickbacks from the manufacturers and the loan companies. The manufacturers got to dump lots of cars they could not give away the month before. And the poor stupid consumer got saddled with even more debt that they cannot afford.
Joe the consumer was convinced that he was getting $4500 in "free" money from the "government" when in fact Joe was giving away his $3500 car and paying an additional $3350 for the privilege.
Don't make sense. throw away what it took to make those auto's, motor's (energy). Then have to buy another new whole car that cost more energy and pollution to make. Seemed the imports came out on the good end of that program? Wonder if I'll be bailing out all those cars loan's. Wonder if those new car owners figured out yet, going to cost them lot more than if they would of just fixed the other one? What I seen, there was a lot of nice auto's junked.
ME AND MY TRUCK TO OLD CLUNCKERS.
not to mention what paid for the whole charade was yours mine and everybodys hard earned tax dollars.
that email is amazing and really sums it up.
I had an 87 ranger 4x4 when the CFC program started. I thought about giving it to my girlfriend to trade in and taking her 99 f250. We didn't and we both kept our trucks. I recently traded my danger ranger for a 72 f100 4x4. I'm glad I didn't buy into that government crap. I traded a $700 truck for a $5000. I see it coming to a point when the government will take our weapons, rape us more on healthcare and say they're helping us, and force all of us old steel gas guzzling automobile owners to park our favorite rides. I still love my country and I served her proudly but when I think of certain things it's hard for me to hold my head up.
I HEAR YOU. My son's wife wanted to trade there 2000 auto in as a clunker. But the problem was It had stop running just at that time, turn out it was the fuel pump ($275.00) they did not have the money to fix it with new baby and all. I bought the fuel pump for them after the clunker deal. And now she's happy and with two vehicels again, that they can afford.
(Dads tough love.)
i agree with yall, a month before the CFC program i could walk into the junkyard near where i live, or even down country roads and see my year model truck (80-86) everywhere, after the CFC they are nowhere to be found, makes it darn near impossible to find parts when you dont have deep pockets to buy OEM and that other crap
