Not another oil question.....

I have been reading all of the posts regarding oil and what you all are using. Recently I have decided to change my oil myself. I asked the parts store rep about synthetic oil as opposed to conventional oil....pros cons and if he would make a change. He said no...use regular oil. Don't make the change at 88K. So I purchased 15W 40W Rotella a filter (not Wix) but Fram and I was out the door.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
OK now for my questions:<o></o>
<o></o>
* Can you at 88K make a change to synthetic without having any issues. <o></o>
<o></o>
* What would be the benefit having 88k and making the switch....smoother running...better starts when cold...???<o></o>
<o></o>
* oil filter....will utilizing a Fram void the remainder of my warranty?

<o></o>
Thanks as always guys for your input...<o></o>

In the world of regular duty Gas power, I might agree with him. Synthetic oil "seeks" (one of the reasons it is better) and can leak in an engine that does not leak using conventional Oil. In the world of med duty the seals and so forth are better. Switch. I did at 70k with no issue and I noticed an improvement in the way it runs.

Fram is a repackaged Racor. Racor is the only one you should use.

Just my thoughts

I'm running 5W30 (light) synthetic at 100k+ miles with no problems... And, yes, the engine is smoother, quieter, etc...

I had a 96 chevy 6.5l with 110k kilometers, (about 65-70k miles), on it a few years ago. After I bought it, I switched to synthetic and I developed a small leak towards the rear of the engine. I switched back to conventional and it stopped. I say go for it and change to synthetic and if it leaks switch back.

Mine leaks also with syn, but not enough to have to add any between OC's. I don't know what for oil the PO of my truck ran, but I started using syn ( Rotella 5-40 ) the 2nd OC after I got it, at @128kish. Fram is repackaged Racor, open box and check to make sure its not been switched. It will have a felt "washer" on the bottom and a bunch of patent numbers. I think its a PH9549? Something like that. Purolator has it also, don't remember the # but it was their "upgraded" filter, Pep Boys had them on sale once or twice. Always open the box and check

Thanks 69cj. Sorry for the mis-information. Been raining for 3 days here, didn't feel like running out to the garage.

I did use the CH9549...same patten #'s and all...just like the Ford stock filter. It was like 19 bucks from Walmart. The filter I purchased from NAPA (auto parts store here in NJ) was a Wix. I read that I should stay away from this filter as it is not a OEM filter and can sause major issues. On top of it the filter was 30 bucks. WTF.....I am going to start buying online as the savings is LARGE. As for the oil.....Does anyone know if I can buy in bulk? Or are we all ropped into the one gallon jugs.

What do you think about a quick change valve?

IIRC the Purolator number is L45515, but if you do NOT see the Patent numbers and the felt seal, do not take a chance!

U.S. Patent 6.554.139 describes the filter components (made by the Parker-Hannifin Corporation).

U.S. Patent 6.086.763 refers to the front disk assembly (not quite as important - made by Ing. Walter Hengst GmbH & Co.).

267,000 miles on the clock here. 6.0 run on mineral oil by previous owner.

I am thinking of moving to synthetic because it flows so much better in cold weather (-20 and -30C).

Anyone with experience with Mobile 1 for Turbo Diesels at those temperatures?

If you're referring to the fumoto valve, get one! You won't regret it, makes OC's soooo much easier. Lots of members here have them and like them as well, its just a matter of nipple/ no nipple whatever you prefer. I am nipple-less
