Question for the master about my Focus

Sorry for the non truck related question. But you guys are the pro's.

My wifes Focus keep showing the "CEL" light in the mornings. Sometimes on the whole trip to work. Some times comeing on and going off. "ON/OFF"
SO far in the last couple trips it is only in the mornings. AE don't capture any trouble codes. Wierd it won't store any. Thinking about setting up to record data on her trip. What data to record? And the numbers will be greek to me after it shows me i think. I am stumped.. O2 sensor? Air intake sensor? 04 focus ZX5 2.3L 55k miles.

Just a WAG...
I find a lot of times , the coolant temp sensor is out of range , making the ECM have to guess on fueling (or fuel incorrectly ) , giving the O2 sensors in the system fits ..You should be able to data log the coolant temp , see how it compares to ambient air temp..

Thanks for that.. Wife just got home. no light on the way home as i would have guessed.

Plugged in. Nothing noticeable. Coolant temp was at (heated up) 199 and the air temp was at 52(which really is 40 outside today) Went for a drive. The air temp dropped to 47.
What i found interesting, Sitting idle, the coolant temp would go up to 220. At 221 the fan kicked in. I thought that was kind of high. Maybe not. No trouble codes except one.

It had one from last week repair (wiper relay replacement) It showed a Code for that.. lol. But anyway, I cleared that code and then i got a p1000 obd systems readiness test not complete. Which goes away after a while seen that one before when i reset codes.. But other than that, Ran fine. I will have to set up the PC to record the trip to work in the morning and see what i see if the light comes on. Dang, i would think if the light came on it should store something

I recorded the trip home from the gas station.. 1 mile.

That is kind of high . May need to check it with a real thermometer, see how accurate it is ..If it throws a CEL , it should store a code ...

Gas Cap? I thought the same thing. Could it be that simple. Won't hurt to try maybe.

Was running late this morning so i didn't get to plug in. I wanted to compare Ampient air temp to coolant temp. See if they matched. It should read after sitting all night. 33 degrees. (that was what we had last night. With snow showers, yuck.) I will check that tomorrow morning and i will check with my temp gauge tonight and see if the coolant temp matches what the radiator hose is.

I am stumped with a CEL light showing with no code.. Confused. My Wife text me this morning. NO LIGHT this morning..

Actually 220 sounds about right. most electric fans aren't programed to come on until temps reach 215-220.
Gas cap would give you an emissions code. 4something I think.

Yea i asked a Honda Tech that sits next me at work. Said the temp sounds good. So i don't think that is an issue anymore.

Good idea Pat.. Won't hurt. I may have to wait now seeing i cleared codes ? The only code i had was my wiper relay that i replaced last weekend.

But the next time that light comes on. I will run it to autozone. Maybe i will stop there this weekend anyhoot.. Need to grab a oil filter anyways.

I haven't done a thing. Just waiting for the light to come on again.. So far it has been behaving. It is wired and still on my radar.. I asked her this morning, As i do everyday, "has the light come on today?" I am sure it will be back because i haven't not done anything. No codes at all. I am baffled and it is hard to fix intermittent things.

One thing i want to look into is the air cleaner. The book says it is non serviceable. After i ripped the wheel liner apart to get to it to see it don't come apart. Then i seen that is is non serviceable. So i may need to look to see if it needs to be replaced. I wonder if it is clogged. Can't see in it or anything to tell if it is restricting the flow.

Thanks for asking.

first thing any focus owner should do is get an intake kit for it. those "non-serviceable" air filters also have about 8 feet of intake before it hits the throttle body. you wont be disappointed if you get an intake for it. i have a cai for mine but some like the sri (short ram intake) more so there is no chance of rain or snow hitting it. what year and engine do you have? i have an 06 duratec 2.0......

Holy COW... I ran out to check the little gauge on it. It looked like, in the glass, that it was in a little. So i pushed the button and i heart a SNAP.. It was dark and hard to see the gauge. But maybe this thing is glogged? It is supposed to last 100 to 150k miles, WHAT are they nuts? What ford engineer came up with that. That is Crasy. Mine only has 55k.. Wonder if that would trip the cel light for some reason.

Looked up for a new one.. I found this and almost fell out of my chair.
Air filter, focus, 2.3l
03-07 $446.60 $321.55

I have a 2.3l 2004.. not sure what motor is in it.. Focus language is different than trucks. What is duratec and how do i find out what mine is? lol. Got a link for your intake? Will it affect emissions inspection?

It currently has one of these fancy big name thingys all wrapped around the driver side wheel well. http://www.visteon.com/products/engine.html
