Front end questions?

I have a 88 F-250 4x4 with 460. I never owned a twin I-Beam 4x4 and it seems to ride quite different from a solid axle. It seems it bounces around more than a I-beam. It has new shocks so I don't think its that. Or is there a brand or certain type of front shocks should be used?

I have a Dana 60 ford out of a 79 F-350 would it be a easy swap as bolt up and make adjustments for steering? Would I have to remove cross member?
Would this be a dumb move since I will be keeping this truck stock?

I want a more secure front end feel responses would be welcomed.

i don't think a 79 D-60 will bolt into your 88 due to different spring perches.

the 86-97 D-60 is a direct bolt in though

id check the shocks. ive had all three types of truck suspensions. i believe the twin I-beam is the heavy duty setup.

If one uses a dana 60 on my truck do you have to make more room where the pumpkin sits next to the cross member? The cross member looks close with the dana 50 or 53 which ever this one is.

Straight axle is the more beefy. I don't plan to use this vehicle alot with a 460 in it just a reliable sturdy/stable riding/pulling vehicle.

Although your truck is a F250 the concepts are the same.

take out the D-50 and throw it away.
unbolt the center drop-down brackets and throw them away too. bolt in the track bar bracket. bolt in the rear. bolt on the track bar. put the F350 steering components on. go for a ride.
it is a 1 day project for 2 guys taking it easy.

actually, if your brakes are good, you can save then from the D-50, cause everything from the hub out is the same on the D-50 and D-60

i think its the I-beam set up cause my 89 is twin I-beam and rides like a beast...my brothers is a solid front axle and rides way smoother and we both have rancho shocks. My dad's is stock and rides the best out of all of our trucks.

TJC Transport,

Which Dana 60 do I use another you mentioned I need a Dana 60 out of a 86 and later vehicle is this correct?
I would rather have a bolt in than do relocation of spring perch shocks, etc

Thanks

Brett

in 80 ford went with the ifs in the F350 4X4 till mid year 86.
so the first year D-60 that will fit in your 88 will be from an 86 F350.
the 86 to 92 are kingpins, 93 to 97 are ball joints. i prefer the kingpin rears.
when you get the rear, try to get all the parts that are associated with it. you will need to put the track bar in, because the front shackles are of an in the frame style instead of an outside the frame style like the pre 80's trucks used.
you will also need to get the F350 steering components, everything except for the pitman arm on the steering box. the geometry between the ifs steering is different than the solid axle stuff.
i have done over 10 swaps so far over the past 21 years.
very easy to do. while it can be done by yourself, but it is way easier to have a helper.

like i said before, anyone with any mechanical ability will be able to do it in one day, and that is with 2-3 beer breaks scheduled into the build.
if pushed, i can do a swap in under 4 hours if i have all the parts and my son helping me

Thanks Tom I appreciate the help. One other question is what is the ball park range for a 86 or later ford f-350 4x4 Dana 60 going for. Do I make a pitman arm or is there an aftermarket one available. I live in southern cali.

Thanks for the scoop

you use the pitman arm you have, unless you are going to go with a lift kit over 4 inches. then you will get the drop arm when you put the kit on.
i have seen D-60's priced between $200 and $1200 here on the east coast.
