Hi there
My husband and I follow the forum regularly and get some great info from everyone! I was hoping for some advice on tires as there appears to be dozens to choose from
We have a 2004 Ex and the tires that came with it were d rated, we've noticed some wandering and after reading some posts think its best for safety reasons we get some new ones.
Has anyone heard of Pirelli all terrains? How are they? We can get a great price on them which is why I'd like to know. We generally run bfg's but are thinking of a change.
What do you all use/reccomend. We live in northern alberta so tires that are good in lots of snow are handy

I have Michelin LTX M/S on mine. No snow in Los Angeles, though. Mine are load range E and have given me 55,000 miles of excellent service, even though they never got rotated. Good luck in your decision.
Maybe throw that question out in the superduty forum.
Maybe even in the Sask chapter forum. Many more users under similar conditions.
I have never run pirelli's so can't comment on them. The other thing that I found while searching for winter tires is not many make them in a proper for us load range.
The last winter I used my mud terrains, but had very little driving all winter. I did order some Arctic claws, made by cooper, for this winter tho because I anticipate a longer winter with more driving on our part. Now I just have to go pay for them and put them on. Should be already mounted on my winter steel rims.
Michelin LTX or Goodyear Silent Armour is what I would personally recommend.
I have mixed feelings about pirelli, they used to have an awesome reputation, but over the years is kinda been tarnished in my opinion. I'm honestly not familiar with the specific tire your talking about though so I can't really comment much on that one.
"We have a 2004 Ex and the tires that came with it were d rated..."
Excursions were recalled iin 2004 (I think) for tires. At that time, all D rated tires were removed by the dealer and replaced with E rated tires. If you still have the original tires that came new on your Excursion, it might be eligible for the recall. If not, you should upgrade to load range E when you change. When the tread wears lower than about 5/32 on any tire on my Excursion, it will start to wander all over the place. New tires will cure it.

I had an earlier version of what you are probably looking at installed on my Excursion as replacements for the recall. They were okay. That's the best I can say about Pirelli as all my prior experiences were bad.
I think Michelin is the best you can buy although not as good as they used to be. I have Yokohama's on my X at the moment and am satisfied but they are only all-season tires.

The research suggestions above are all good. I'll add check the Tire Rack website. There is a lot of useful information there along with buyer's reviews.
I've been to Alberta, Canada, I've seen the snow, and I would definitely recommend either BFG All-Terrains, Goodyear Silent Armors, or Toyo Open Country ATs, in that order.
It doesn't snow here in South Texas, but we do have mud and there have been situations where I was sure I was going to get stuck and would need a tow, but these BFG All-Terrains haven't let me down yet.
So +1 on the BFGs...
Pilrelli's are awesome on-road tires, but they just can't seem to get it right when it comes to catering to the off-road sector.
Best tire for the money are Firestone Transforce A/T's : Firestone Transforce AT
If you do have the original tires, and they are "D" rated, then you will get a new set under the recall.
I have the original tires that came with my X. BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A (Load range E) The only thing I did was to have them siped. I also run them at 65 psi. I rotate them every 7,000 miles. I currently have 94,893 miles on them. No BS.

Another good choice if you're on-road alot, jdadmsjr just got about the same on his '05 Excursion.
Hey guys, thanks for all the responses! Quite a variety
The tires on our Ex were brand new when we bought it last year, but we didn't realize it was wrong load rating til we started being uncomfortable with the wandering. We are hoping new tires solve that
Hubby reads this forum religously, and has noticed lots of ppl liking the Hancook DynaPro ATM or somthing, so I think he's leaning that way.
If anyones had bad exp with them let me know. Wow! I had no idea tires could be so complicated LOL!!

Some of your wandering might not be tires. Mine used to be pretty bad, especially when towing until I installed an anti-sway bar. There are different systems available for the EX that improve handling....
Just to throw you a monkey wrench... I LOVE Bridgestone Blizzaks for winter. They last longer than I expected and the traction (yes, even on ice) is well worth the investment.
Now if I can just get them to jump off the old steel wheels onto the new steel wheels.

Had Pirelli Scorpion A/T's on a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Good dry and wet handling, not much snow in NC. Less than impressed with tread life considering 5 tire rotation every 6K miles. Doubt they lasted 35K miles before treadbar began showing.
Keep us posted if you decide to mount the Hankook's. I remember an article in Off-Road ( ? ) where they mounted them on an H1 and were seriously impressed and I've been considering them to replace my Cooper's ( ~70K on a 50K warranty tire ).
