I've got an 89 F150 4x4 with the 300, standard 4 speed; Soon I'll be swapping motors with and 86, still the 300 but with carb. I want to put a set of Hedmans on it, Hedman Hedders 89300 - Hedman Street Hedders - Overview - SummitRacing.com
They (at Summit and Hedman), tell me that they wont fit the 4x4, Due to clearance issues from the tranny crossmember, ... has anyone put this set on a 300 4x4 without much hassle and/or massive modification?
From everything that I've read, headers on a 300 don't really make a lot of difference, the EFI manifolds flow as well as anything out there. Save your money and upgrade the intake and heads, this is where you will see your gains.
Take a look at the stuff from Clifford Performance.
No I haven't put those headers on a 4x4, but I've done enough "custom" header jobs to know that anything is possible. Dealing with a tranny crossmember sounds like a rather minor problem.
I gotta agree with andym. When looking into upgrades I was told by a couple people that the efi manifolds for a 300 flow like headers and are a great upgrade for a carb'd motor but headers won't do much for the efi money. So your money is best spent in other area's.
