Smile Engine brake

I just purchased a 1997 f-250 with a 7.3 diesel, and the former owner said it has a engine brake, but he didn't know how it works, he never used it. I have a switch on the dash, but have no idea what it goes to, or how it works, Can anybody give some clues as to where to look, and what to look for, and now it works. All he said, was that it created a lot black smoke. Thank

The exhaust back pressure valve on our trucks can be used as an engine brake. It can be wired to a switch that activates it. Thats probaly what the switch is for. Turn the switch on when your driving it, you will know if thats what it is for it will slow you down pretty good. It works really well.

If its an aftermarket engine brake they have a cylinder of sorts set off the side of the exhaust. depending on the manufacturer they can be placed right behind the turbo, in the dp, or further down the main exhaust pipe. The aftermarkets work good depending on the brand, ther are some Ive worked with which are prone to fail by havin the bushings on the butterfly valve get clogged up with soot, and quit. It shouldnt cause any smoke though it doesnt do anything that would cause it.
