Will a Ford AOD transmission fit a 351W in my 85? It has a C6 and I'd like to get those rpms down with some overdrive. I was going to use a Lokar bolt to the top gear shift if it can.
Yea, I can $wing it sometime late next year. My goal is to rebuild this truck. I found it last month and my wife fell in love with it and insisted we pay the $300 the guy was asking for it. The guy didn't feel like replacing the steering column (broken tilt), front gas tank (hole) and the solenoid. The 351W has a mild cam in it, but the C6 has gotta go.
I'd wondered if a beefed up one would be the way to go. I know AODs are okay for 302s, but I wasn't sure about 351Ws. Thanks for the links, I'm going to bookmark all of them.
The AOD in my truck survived 8 years with a mildly built 351 on it and it had nothing but a shift kit, all you need is a 28oz AOD flexplate to make it work and these are available since this combo was used in the Crown Vic.
Thanks Conanski, it didn't seem like what I was planning to do was too crazy. From other places I've read, Ford used both AOD and C6 with this generation of trucks. I've also read that in 85 some Ford trucks got the fuel injection while others have a carburetor. Mine has a carburetor which makes me very happy.
