New '03 EB Expy, brake dust is terrible. Within 20 miles of washing the front wheels are noticably dirty and at 50 miles they're a black mess. The rear wheels are not as bad, of course, but it's not good. Much, much worse than my '96 Exploder. Is this possibly a newness issue or am I looking at a lifetime of wheel cleaning? Also, is there some sort of sheild available to reduce the brake dust? Thanks.
I have heard the shields are bad because they don't allow the heat to escape as easily.
All BMWs have this same problem with brake dust. Look at the front rims of any BMW that has not been washed in 2-3 days and you will see a huge build-up. Many guys in the BMW Car Club have tried numerous fixes and mostly just end up disappointed. All I can figure is to clean them frequently. Tried P21S rim cleaner when washing and it works so-so.
About the only thing I found was to treat the rims and clean them in between washings. I have found the best thing to be Klasse Sealant Glaze. The dust still accumulates but not as quickly and you can clean them easier. You can also use wax for similar results but the glaze works the best. Then, get one of those dash California Car Dusters and wipe the rims. It takes just a few minutes, and you will get off 98% of the dust without getting your hands dirty. Then I wipe with damp microfiber cloth.
Good luck let us know if you come up with a better solution
Unfortunately, there currently are no ceramic pads manufactured for the '03 Expy. Two different brake shops advised against the Kleenwheels. So, I wait............
YES!! I have the same problem!! Is it an actual brake PROBLEM or just new wear on brakes that causes this?
I only have 1200 miles. Does this go away? if so when?
I've noticed what appears to be a break-in period with brake pads on new cars (BMW's, Saabs) that cause a lot of brake dust to be deposited on the wheels, especially the front wheels. I would suggest that you remain patient and give your X a few thousand more miles before trying any changes.
Be sure that your rims are clean and free of any type of tire detailing products. These products are dirt and dust magnets. I would try brake dust shields as a last resort. Even though these shields are vented, they restrict airflow around the wheels/rotors/calipers. Not really a great idea.
I believe it will be a lifetime thing until you change the pads. It all started with the Escape. The Escapes had teh dust problem first, then when the new Explorer came out it has dust problems too and now the new Expedition. Its the pads Ford is using on their new vehicles. Its a very unfortunate thing.

It appears to be a lifetime problem as long as you run the OEM pads. I have over 5000 miles on mine and still washing the front wheels 2 or 3 times a week.
There are ceramic pads out that will last twice as long without the dust, but they seem to be pretty hard on the rotors.
If anyone installs the ceramics, let us know how you like them!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Oct-02 AT 01:21 AM (EST)]Are there ceramic pads available now? I've called a couple brake shops who told me none were available yet, and the Raybestos site doesn't list Quiet Stop pads for the '03 X. Any info regarding availability would be appreciated.

im pretty sure its a newness thing when i had my 98 expy the first 3,000 they where really dusty but it gos away
I agree that it might be a new pad thing. It also doesn't help that they add that tire shine goop all over the tire and rim during PDI. It took me several car washes before I finally got that stuff off. I too have noticed the brake dust reduces with use.
I now wax my rims (whenever I notice the dust is not washing easily) and it washes off easily with soap and water everytime.
