Have a '91 EB Bronco. What is the "Special Tool" required to get the front wheel bearings out? Winter is coming and now I have the time to work on it. Can one of these tools be made?
You dont need a special tool. A small screwdriver and a punch will take the lock nut off. If thats what your having the problem with. You just push the rachet teeth in and back them off as much as you can (about a 1/4 inch) with the driver, then you use the punch to back the whole nut off the same amount. After doing this about ten times, the nut will just spin off.
It is a 4 prong socket you can get at the auto parts store. Make sure you get the one for the 1/2 ton specifically the year of your truck. It is a bit pricey when compared to the regular 6/12 point sockets, but it will save you a huge headache. Makes retorquing the spindle nut more specific than guessed at. The screw driver method works but I didnt like how it cant be re torqued to the appropriate settings. Besides it mars the nuts up something terrible.
If you have the auto hubs, be sure to remove the retaining C-clip and thrust washer that is on the axle shaft. It will make removing the spindle nut(s) so much easier.
Also, if you have the 3 bolt auto hubs, the 4 prong socket won't work.
The 3 bolt autohubs use a spindle nut socket that is the shape of a large hex head.

You could do this - you could also damage the locknut or the spindle threads with this method. Not to mention it's impossible to put the correct torque on the locknut when re-assembling. Spend the $10 to get the right tool for the right job. Any parts store should have one, just ask for a Dana 44 spindle socket.
The spindle nut socket works on the old double nut setup. (which I changed mine to) But if he has the single rachetnut setup, it doesnt work. Before I changed mine, I removed it many times without damageing anything.

Not true, my socket works on both types. I originally bought the tool for my 86 Bronco, which used the double nut sandwich, but the tool also works on both my 89 and 90 trucks with the ratcheting nut.
Yours must be differnt than mine, I also bought the socket when I had an 88'. It wouldnt fit on my 90' untill I changed to the old design. On my rachetnut, the slots were resessed inside a steel cup. The socket drive blocks would get hung up on the cup and never reach the slots.
