My Chilton does not recognize V as a possible engine identifier. I have a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine, but they list that engine with a U identifier. My Check Engine light is on, and the problem was identified as a Camshaft Position Sensor problem, but when I consult the Chilton for the location of that sensor, the engine picture does not agree with what I find in the truck. I can't find the CMP, unless it is somewhere under the air conditioner mount. Is it possible that my particular V6 is a different engine?
V is the Flex Fuel version of the U engine. There should be a flex fuel insignia on the tailgate.
The CMP is about where you would expect the distributor to be on a 302. There's two bolts holding the sensor on, wire connection pointing toward the front. Don't turn the synchronizer while removing the cmp sensor, or it must be re-aligned before the CMP sensor is installed.
Thanks for the information. Took another look and still can't find the CMP or any space where one might be. Please check my photos listed under "1999 Ranger "V" 3.0
Its tempting to buy one cheap, however, you often get get you pay for. If Ford's price is too much for you, go to a higher end auto parts store for your replacement. It will save you more misery later on.
Thanks for the tips. I will head sdown to the big city and see if I can find something at Napa. I'm still confused as to why every reference to CMP sensors on the 3.0 engine places the sensor in the front part of the engine, but mine is located in the right rear quadrant. Is the "V" engine really that different?
Thanks, I'll get back on the problem this morning. I was rally surprised to find the CMP on the right rear quadrant of the engine. Everything I have shows it to be located on the top left side. Were there different versions of the 3.0, V6?
