Question for Number Dummy
What is this third member out of and is it a 3.00-1 gear set?
Will it fit in a 1964 F100?
I found it really cheap and might try it with a 223 motor.
Thanks,
Jayson
Original application: 1965 Galaxie/LTD.
5FC: Assembled the third week (C) of June (F) 1965 (5).
The 3rd member will fit, the housing and axle shafts will not, as they're a different length.
FWIW, I've heard reports from other owners of similar vinatage 223-powered trucks, that 3:1's are a bit tall for all-around use.
Even 3.25's seem to require some clutch slippage upon take-off and tend to "lag" a little on hills.
Of course, I guess its about the application, too. If you're going to use it as an actual "truck", then maybe your original intent of going with 3.50-3.55 gears is a better one.
If you can find a wide-ratio Toploader tranny to match it, all the better.
If you're making the truck into some kind of "custom vehicle", that'll never see another day of work in its life, then maybe the 3.00 gears would be ok.
However, if you're planning on switching to an automatic, then, used for original intent or not, 3.00 gears just might be the ticket....and, of course, if you get lucky enough to find an Automatic OD tranny in good shape for a bargin price, then you could just leave the stock 3.89's in there, as the OD gear would more than make up for it on the freeway.
