A lot of black smoke on startup today!
It was 15 degrees here this am, went out and tried to start the truck. Cranked for quite a while, and finally she started to run, kinda. Acted like it was missing but looked in the mirror and black smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. Truck would act like it was going to die, then run normal, then act like it was trying to die, then normal. Truck did this for about a minute, all the while pouring black smoke out, then all the sudden started running normal.
I know lots of black smoke usually mean way to much fuel, correct? Im wondering if this is injector orings starting to die, or possibly just injectors leaking.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks.

Black smoke:
Caused by excessive fuel for the amount of air drawn into the cylinders. Some black smoke on hard accel or at higher altitudes is normal.
Excessive black smoke could result from restricted intake or exhaust, inoperative leaking or weak turbo, intake hose(s) leaks, leaking or worn injectors, fuel return or supply restriction, stuck Exhaust backPressure Regulator valve or solenoid. Also PCM inputs such as BARO MAP ICP or EBP sensors.

No, a closing EBPV would not cause black smoke or poor running engine. It could be bad diesel, do you run DK? I wonder if they changed over to winter diesel yet. Other then that, I am out of thoughts.

But it for SURE can make it run poorly.
I had to wire mine open to get the truck to run.

If I had a problem with the fuel delivery, i.e. plugged screens in the tank, which i suspect a little bit, would this cause this? Started it just a few mins ago, and same symptoms, but this time I shut it off during all the black smoke stuff, restarted it and it ran totally normal. Im stumped.
