I own '97 Expedition with the 5.4L, 3.73. I tow about a 5000 pound camper 6 hours away regularly. I get 7-8 MPG on this trip (5 hours of 4 lane highway, 1 hour of two lane). It's very repeatable.

I came across an excellent shape '06 6.0L PSD CrewCab F250, 3.73 earlier this year. On the same trip, I get 13 MPG, and a much more pleasant towing experience.

My opinions based on my experience and expected performance of a tow vehicle.

1) 5.4L, even newer, falls at the lower limit of my desires as a powerplant for a tow vehicle.
2) Super Duty frame & length make a for a better towing experience no matter what the engine.

Call me names or ridicule me...but that's the way I feel ;-)

Additionally, had I found a deal on the V10, I would have bit on that as well. Quieter than the PSD, and I suspect it would have done as well for my needs. What I expect out of my tow vehicle is 1) strength to handle the load during braking and manuevering 2) power to move the load forward 3) room to grow and still meet #1 and #2.

Yes my truck says I avg 13.9 and that is over 43k miles since I have had new. And I have not reset that once. And around town I can get 13-14 mpg which is still 2-4 mpg better then the v-10.
Lastly lets mathematically breakdown that last one... If you get 18MPG on the highway and you get 13-14MPG around town, how could that possibly average to 13.9 if the low end of the spectrum is (by averaging your estimate 13.5).

If you look at your previous posts, your conduct, and what you've also claimed in this thread it makes it very difficult to believe. Again, you've got a great truck. I'd LOVE an 08+ truck, but common it seems like you have multiple reports that are all over the board in terms of mileage depending on how much you want to defend your 5.4.

Well just like Kwart I think that's his name. He called it a lie-o-meter. I don't really judge that. Hell when my low fuel light comes on and it says I have 0 mile to empty I still have 3 gallons left in the tank. Cause I filled up when it showed 0 miles to empty and put 27 gallons in it. So I really don't go off of that. I do it by my trip meter and how many gallons I put in this truck. Also I have notice I'm getting better mpg since I'm putting more and more miles on the truck.

People readily acknowledge that driving styles and terrain impact mpg, but almost always overlook the increase in weight to the superduty chassis that occured in 2005, along with the introduction of the 3v motors. For 2005 and after, superduties have more weight, and more horsepower and worse mpg... You can't compare apples and oranges!

So what are you averaging by your hand calculations of overall mileage city and hwy combined?

In town I have been avg about 13.5 and on the highway just depends on how much in a hurry I am but if I keep the speed around 65 mph then I can get 18 mpg. I went from Dallas to Van Horn last year and I stopped in Big springs to fill up and I was avg 18.1 mpg. But I kept the cruise control set at 65 mph just going down I-20.

i get about 11.5 mpg out of my 5.4. if you all didn't know there is actually a country part of new jersey up in the northern most county, and that's where i'm from. lots of hills and getting on and off the gas. i only put about 5-6k a year on the truck so that's why the mileage doesn't bother me. i drive about 80 miles a day between going to school and work. i've got a beater civic with 200k+ on it that i drive daily. i've tried killing the car so i have an excuse to drive the truck, BUT IT JUST WON'T DIE!!! i'm closing in on my 20th birthday and would be broke if i drove the truck daily on top of my truck payment and insurance.

mediamanrit, Since it makes sense for you to wait for the '11 Ford, why don't you try this:

go to your lease agent and tell them that when the lease ends, you want to close out the contract and then lease the truck month-to-month for an estimated 4-6 months for the same monthly payment.

If they have any sense, they will jump at this chance to get several more monthly payments for a truck that will have essentially the same resale value in the end. Whatever you do, don't tell them that you are buying the Ford!!!! Tell them that due to business conditions you have to wait a little longer before making your next move.
