Keep in mind mine is a chassis cab with a dump body. Big difference in aerodynamics plus it's a DRW 4x4 and weighs somewhere in the 9,000 lb range. It probably weighs closer to 9,400 lbs with me in it and the stuff in the side tool box. It also only has 2,500 miles on it.
I don't lie and I don't sugar coat. I posted the mileage on the truck and the fuel consumption based on how I use it.
I posted my experience just to present another point of view. The V10 pickup should have better results due to better aerodynamics and less weight.
I could have also gotten the 5.4l for $300 dollars less. How do you think my truck would have performed with the 5.4l and what kind of fuel mileage to do think I would get?
jac, it sounds like you don't own both either so how can you give any more than your opinion on what you have? That's what we all do. Is the OP looking for a 5.4L or looking for "which engine"? I read the the thread topic again and it looks like the OP wants opinions of each gas engine.
If the OP needs significant power, the V10 has significantly more power. If the OPs main concern is mileage than the 5.4L will get better mileage. It boils down to that. I get 9 - 12.5 mpg, meaning I don't get worse than 9 (towing, offroad that is the worst I've gotten and I've gotten better) and on the freeway I've gotten 12.5 mpg consistently, sometimes better, but not often.
If mpg is the ultimate concern, a 2WD will likely make even more of a difference than what engine.

Well obviously you didn't read the thread cause I said my truck is a 2008 f-250 CC 4X4 5.4l. But you're right I have no idea what my truck can or can not do.

Maybe being in Texas helps you out with mileage/power because it's flatter? I've only driven a little through Texas and those areas (compared to where I've lived) were fairly flat. How tall are the hills/mountains in your area? And for our OP, what area do you live in, and what terrain will you deal with in your truck? Terrain will have a significant effect on how a truck performs, and since we all don't live in the same town, we'll have different results & perceptions from that factor alone, along with many other variables.
I lived in CO when I bought my truck. My house sat at 5400' and Loveland Pass hits about 12,000' with 6% grades on the way. Pulling a 20' horse trailer through the Rockies, I was very happy that I bought a diesel, but that's me.
Also, for the OP, have you considered buying used? I bought my 99 three years ago today. I've modified it with exhaust, tuner, etc and have gotten a best average of 20mpg @ 70mph over a 4,000 mile roadtrip. Normal is 18mpg in an F250 CC SB 4x4 with 3.73 gears. Saving $20k+ on a used truck (gas or diesel) with leave lots of cash for fuel, mods, tires, even satellite radio.
I love my truck. It does what I need, when I need it, in a way that is very satisfactory to me. I think if you can say the same, then you have the right truck for you.
LOL!!! I have been wondering how long it would take for a 7.3L owner to chime in. You're going to push jac beyond his threshold and cause the poor man a heart attack.

Why? I also have a 97 psd CC DRW 2wd. I can get 20 mpg on the highway without the racks on the back. Oh it's bone stock with 232k miles on it.
Just as well. You've already said enough on this subject. Time to let the next group of people come through with their input.
BTW, I never did give my suggestion. Personally, it seems to me that the OP might be best off with a new F150. They are darn near just as capable as my 2000 F250 but will be more civil the other 95% of the time during everyday driving. I like the reliability and good fuel economy of my 7.3L but as of lately I have become tired of the noise and rough ride. My next truck might be a used F150 in another couple years.
No I can't stand when someone is looking for a new truck and they want a gas engine and is looking at 5.4. Here comes the v-10 guys saying to get a v-10 instead of a 5.4 cause it's underpowered and the v-10 gets 1-2mpg less then the 5.4. You know if you don't own one then how do you know if it's under powered. And the way people are talking in this thread the mpg is a bigger difference then 1-2mpg.
I can't comment on the power of a 5.4 vs a V10 but I suspect there is a fairly noticible difference, otherwise whats the point right?

I did go back and read some of your previous posts all the way back to March which stated you were averaging 13 MPG but had seen as good as 17 on the highway? But in this thread you first claimed 18mpg highway, then after the fact said it was 18mpg average. What you said in the original thread about lines up with what others 5.4 owners say as well.
If thats the case that would be about a 1-2mpg difference.
I'm certainly NOT saying "There is no need for a 5.4 in a SD platform" but it DOES sound like from your own admission that there is about a 1-2 MPG difference between the two motors and there is a fairly substantial power gain (on paper). Again this is all up to the original poster, but it's important that the facts we present him are correct.

I have got 18 mpg on the highway at best. You v-10 guys are saying you will get 13-14 mpg at best. That is 4 mpg difference. Yes my truck says I avg 13.9 and that is over 43k miles since I have had new. And I have not reset that once. And around town I can get 13-14 mpg which is still 2-4 mpg better then the v-10. If he doesn't haul that much the 5.4 is a no brainer. If you can get 3-4 mpg better then that is 90-120 miles per tank which is less money at the pump.

If you haven't reset the lie-o-meter, than how do you know you're getting 13-14 around town? What you're seeing is the average of ALL TIME. Even when you're "around town".
Now, since I got a "reported post" from this thread, can we all get along?

Cause I can do basic math that is how I know what I'm getting around town. I mainly do highway driving. But whenever I know I'm going to do alot of city driving I fill up that morning and by that afternoon I fill up again and see how many gallons I used and see how many miles I went. And I avg around 13-14 in town.
And I can't believe I got reported. That is BS. This is the only site that you can't call other people names on here. Who really takes this name calling serious? I'll try to keep my language rated G.
