97 Ford F350 with abs. Today the abs light starts blinking. I feel the brakes, they seem fine. I stop the vehicle and shut off the engine. Then start the engine, the abs light is still blinking. I try to put the shifter in drive, it won't go. I press on the brake pedal harder and try to shift, it still won't go.
You can jumper the shift lock-out, but your brake lights will stay on. The BOO switch has to be closed to take it out of Park, and when it's closed the lights are on, hence the name Brake On/Off switch.
Sounds like an issue with the shift lock/boo switch, maybe take a peak and make sure it's on there good and not loose, wiggling, etc.
A little trick i learned years ago. If stuck out on the road.
Turn the ignition lock enough to just unlock the wheel.(no dash lamps)
This will allow you to select netural for startup. The child
lockout is activated with run/start voltages.

your owners manual will tell you how to get it in to nuetral and start it up so you can get home. Happened to me out in the woods. I blew a fuse (# 13 under the dash, I think) for my brake lights. The truck wouldn't shift out of park. We looked through the owners manual and got it home, then I found the blown fuse.
Thanks guys. I found a blown fuse number 13 I believe a 15 amp. I replaced it with the only fuse I had available a 25 amp and it blew. Now I need to find the reason for blowing the fuse. Any ideas???

On my truck it was the wires for my trailer wiring. I have a gooseneck and wires are run thru the bed of the box. I had the connector off and the wires touched when i was loading the truck. If you have a trailer connector it may be shorting out. I would start there.

I found the problem. The mason dump has those bolt on rear brake/signal lights. The one on the passanger side had a wire come off the contact to the bulb. This was frayed and rubbing on the grounding plate which blew the fuse. This also took out the #13 fuse and this caused the ABS light to blink in the dash. All this stuff locked my automatic shifter in park.
