Column and fuel tank help?

I have a 70 Crewcab that was originally an automatic and now is manual. I know you can change out the column. Can anyone tell me what model truck to look for that would have tilt with no auto shifter? I also want to delete the fuel tank from behind the rear seat cause I don't like it behind my kids. If Im correct 73-79 frames are wider than the 67-72 frames. What fuel tank can I use to put it between the rails or at the rear that would allow me to use hangers without alot of fab work?

Ok, Let's see if I can untangle your mis information.

1- The tilts were only offered in 78-79 Lariats, top of the line pickups. Bob may well say different, but I have never seen a tilt that was not automatic, so none.

2- The 73-79 frame rails were widened behind the cab. Late 60s Mustang tanks will fit between your rails, but not just plug in, you will have to mod it in.
b- Guys like yourself pop in saying they are afraid of the gas tanks in the cab. There are no known safety issues concerning the placement of the tank in these trucks. I must say that I love my wifes husband the most, and he rides with one everytime the truck moves.

If you are gonna run one of these ol pickups, you have to work with what you have or be willing to skin some knuckles and get dirt under your nails. IMHO

John, tilt columns WERE available with four-speed trannys, but they are VERY rare.

I see them on ebay from time-to-time, and they usually go for $275 and up. I'd like to get one of those myself, but that's a little pricey, especially since I have two automatic tilt columns, and I think I may be able to mod one of those suitably.

I think they may have been available with any trim package, not just the Lariat, but I'll defer to ND on that one.

F100/350's: The Tilt Wheel feature was first offered (as an extra cost option) in 1978.

Applications: 1978/79 F100/350 2WD / 1978/79 F150/250 4WD / 1979 F350 4WD.

Offered with A/T or w/a 4 Speed Manual.

John, the Tilt Wheel feature was an option on all these trucks, not just Lariats.

Some of these trucks with Tilt will also have Cruise Control.

Some people are totally unaware they have a tilt wheel, because...

The Tilt Wheel feature works off the TURN SIGNAL HANDLE.

Press it forward: BOING!

1978/79 Bronco's and Econolines also were available with the Tilt Wheel feature.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Narrow rear frame rails: ALL 1973/77 F250 4WD's (High Boys), some 1973/79 F350's.

Narrow: The rear frame rails are 33 1/2" apart, as opposed to 37 1/2" for other 1973/79 F100/350's.

Thanks for setting that straight, I have only run across them in auto Lariats.

I also am aware of making a pickup tilt by mating it with a E tilt and cutting 6 1/2' out the length.

Oops, I see I did Bob rather than Bill.

Someone on here has posted about using a Bronco II tank with the without too much fabbing. You could probably dig it up on a search.

Ive been out of town all week and thought I had notifications set up on my phone so I was unaware anyone had responded. Sorry. Believe me John all Ive ever owned has been old with lots of knuckle left behind on parts to get it going. Ive already had to cut the rails, shorten, and reweld them where my dad had stretched it and put a flatbed on it. What sucks is that it had a rear tank on it before but I dont know what was used. I know there are no known safety issues before, BUT all I can think of is taking a hit in the side and the tank busting. Maybe I should lift it so other cars would pass under it! Lol. I will look into the mustang and bronco II tanks for sure. I will look for the column in those years suggested. I knew it had been done before but wasnt sure of the year to look for. Off topic but since I have the attention of the wise....Ive noticed that LMC offers a kit to delete the vent window on the 73-79 trucks. Will this work on pre 73 models?

1970 Mustang, 22 gal. tank fits between the frame rails, fills through a fabbed fuel door at the rear end of the bed floor. Sending unit uses the same ohm parameters as the truck fuel gauge.

Not to be an a$$, but what don't you like about the vent windows? Besides being a Ford, the vent windows and highs on the floor are the two best things about these ole trucks, IMO.

I'd love to have a couple big mirrors in place of the vent windows like the newer trucks, so I can see when backing up.

Here's your chance to get some...

The chrome mirrors that fit into the slots in the doors look nice, but are next to worthless for seeing what's behind you.

The solution is, remove those puppies when planning on towing something, replace with the following.

C3TZ17696B .. Telescoping Outside Mirror Kit / Mirror Head is 5" x 8" / Use with existing slots in the doors / Obsolete

Fits: 1961/66 F100/1100.

HAVEN FORD SALES in Haven KS has ONE = 800-748-7803.

WILLEY FORD in Ames IA has ONE = 515-233-1913.

ED BENNETT FORD PARTS in Lebanon PA has ONE = 717-272-8762.

An FTE member bought two of these mirror kits from Haven several months ago. They charged him the original 1963 price of 17 bucks each.

Well, just to add to this subject, how hard is it, or is it possible, to adapt a column out of a 79 to these trucks? I have access to a 79 4x4 donor that I'm considering robbing the power steering and brakes out of for my 67 4x4.

It's pretty much a bolt-in for both the steering column and the brakes.

Great! Only problem is, the donor is an auto, and my 67 is a manual. Can you I'll have to see about modifying the column to remove the shift lever.

Good luck with that.

The shift collar is cast aluminum.

Finding a collar for a manual column (column shift OR floor shift) is going to be next to impossible. I don't even think Ford offered the tilt column on 3-speed manual trucks.

If the donor vehicle is 4WD, you'll need to find the lower flange for the column, as the 4WD used a shaft with U-joints, and the 2WD trucks had a rag joint.
