What is the largest sized tire that will fit in the under bed tire mount? Or, a better question may be, is it possible to easily modify the existing stock mount to accept a larger tire?
I've read some of the posts here regarding other options for carrying a spare (tailgate mounts, bed mounts, etc), but I'd really like to put it back up under the bed, if I can get it to fit.
I have a 2001 F350 crew cab with a short bed. Thanks so much for any ideas!
It may not lift a stock size spare the first time. The high quality plastic gears in the spare tire lift stripped the first time I used it. So right now my spare tire is in between my '69 220 diesel and '89 YJ in my garage. The high quality spare lift happens to be in the bed taking up valuable space.
How big a tire are you wanting to shove under there Melanie? My wife's got an 01 short bed with 285's that fit. Of course all we did was crank it up and determined it fit. I've got no idea how much extra clearance we may or may not have.
Keep in mind anything is possible if you're willing to spend the money. If it dries up enough tomorrow I'll measure how much clearance we have on the 285's to give you some idea of how much larger you can go, but it's sounding like the 315's don't fit in the stock space.
There is a bar that restricts the size of tire you can put under there due to it being too close to the exhaust pipe. Of course if you have stacks or come out in front of the rear wheals yopu can get rid of that bar and put a bigger tire under there, I just dont know how big of one. Also if you have a hitch reciever the tire will be almost up against that too.
I have my spare in the bed right now, but its really in the way. Especially when we're going riding.

After my blow-out weekend before last, I got a set of 295's. This is what I want to put up under the bed. I know the 315's don't fit since that's the size I had on before and the guys at the tire shop told me they couldn't get it to fit.
(not to hijack my own thread, but I'm so glad I got these smaller tires! I got between 24-26.6 mpg on the highway coming home from baja! woot woot!)
I appreciate your willingness to crawl under your wife's truck and measure for me! Don't worry, though. I'll have my son crawl under mine and measure it (hey, what are teenagers for?) and post it up here tomorrow.

I do have a hitch reciever. When my son crawls under the truck tomorrow, I'll be sure to have him check that out too.

did u get this mileage from reading the Overhead display? Becuse if u legitimately got this mileage with your truck, we all wanna know what u did to get it besides the tires.

Yes, I did get this from the overhead display, which I know from reading here is not accurate. But according to this display, my gas mileage increased by at least 4-5 mpg with the smaller tires. This is compared to driving the same road, the same speed, in the same weather conditions.
You realy need to watch out for that. When I put my four in exhaust on it actually was against the 265 spair and started to melt the rubber.
I guess that might make the spare ride a little rough with a flat spot melted on it. While I think it would be funny, my wife probably won't be as amused if she's having to drive it, not to mention the grief I'll get from my girls after all I've given them about paying attention and maintaining their vehicle. Looks like I need to crawl under there anyway.
I realize that I have an F550 and it's not really a "pickup truck". I have no spare tire mount anywhere at all and got tired of working around it.
It used to lay in the bed of the truck behind the hitch and take up space.
So I made a spare tire mount out of weld steel and painted it with POR-15.
Just an idea....
