Built 351w started. Here's the problems....

Well, it started up today. I had the rotor pointing at the #1 cycl wire and the thing had a hard time turning over. I took the diztributor and turned it all the way to the left and with the help of holding open the throttle some, she fired up. Inside the cab, the engine and check engine lights were on and only the tach was on and the oil pressure wasnt registering. fuel pressure was at 43psi when running, but it was idling at +- 500 rpm. There was white smoke coming out of one of the headers on the drivers side. Whats going on??

White smoke or steam? Did it smell like coolant?

Its the motor I built up in my sig. And come to find out, it was a flame shooting out of the header. If i advance the timing a little that goes away. I bought a mech oil pressure gage that Im going to hook up tomorrow instead of the one on the instrument panel. We will see how much pressure I really have then.

SHould I have to adjust the idle on this motor? it only will start if the throttle is held open about half way and then I have to keep the throttle held about a quarter inch away from the adjustment screw. Is this about normal? FI motors shouldnt need to have the throttle held open to start though. Maybe its because my O2s not hooked up? maybe not getting enough air or something?

Im not an expert but it could be something with the IAC on the throttle body... sounds like it may be stuck shut and not let letting air through. If you have a check engine light on though id pull the codes and go from their...

also sounds like your timing my be off, but just put the timing light on it and play with the dizzy till you get it were you want it... if its way off that cause poor idle also.

Baja is right. Stock timing is 10 degrees BTDC with spout connector removed.
And no you should not have to move the idle screw. May correct itself when you set the timing.

Uh oh. I have it set at 0*. is that bad? she sounded like she was running good there. Ill set it at 10* BTDC. And the engine and check engine light is on. I thought maybe because I have no 02 sensor hooked up.

being set at TDC (0*) doesnt hurt any thing but the motor isnt gonna have any power, bump it up to 10* like mentioned above... I never thought of it earlier but if you just have the headers on and nothing else it may effect how it runs. Theirs almost no back pressure on the motor and they tend to backfire when you rev them up (cause its lean).

Having no O2 sensor hooked up probly is setting the check engine light on. Id still pull the codes to be sure, sounds like something isnt hooked right if some of the guages arent workin.

Did you modify the motor or is it a stock replacment?...

The motor has Crane 444232 cam, GT40 heads with 1.7 RR and Flowtech LTs. Also has an adj fpr and fuel pressure gague. The oil guage wasnt working, so I went and got a mech gague and hooked it up in its place. Worked like a charm.

I lost power steering!!

Ah jeez, whats next? Most likely the gear box or the power steering pump? They both worked fine before I tore the motor out of it. I looked at the lines and none of them are kinked. There is pleanty of fluid in it. THis is getting fun!!

I got it through Jegs.

The motor is running well right now. Smooth idle, great sound. I want to thank everyone for their help on this build. I will pull the codes tomorrow because the red engine light is on and so is the check engine light. Will post to let you all know the results.
