longer/stronger pulse of oil to fire your injectors.
change the reservoir gasket for sure. You'll also need a 1/2" drive 1-1/8" Craftsman deep socket to get out & reinstall your IPR. Other brands seem to not be as deep, but the Craftsman is definitely.
Oh, and some oil too. When you take off the HPOP the reservoir will drain in to the valley, so you'll need to top that off.
It's a VERY good idea to suck the oil out of the reservoir. Otherwise, you'll dump 3/4 quart of oil into your valley when you pull the reservoir off. I used a hand pump that goes on a jug of lube. Turns out the little straw that goes on the bottom fits right in the access port: ''
Here you can see the straw thing that attaches to the bottom, kind of like a spray bottle. Sorry the pic is a little fuzzy.
Here it is in the jug. I pumped the oil into this jug, then used that hose attached to the nozzle to pump the oil back in. Since I JUST did an oil change, I didn't see the need to throw that oil out.
I honestly can't remember where I got it. One of the chain parts stores, I think. I believe I still have the bag it came in (didn't come on a jug, it was sold separately) -- I'll go look for the package. It's actually for filling diffs or manual transmissions where there's no room to tip the bottle up. When I had my Ranger, there was ZERO room to fill the gear box, so I had to find a way to pump the fluid into the fill port. It also fits perfectly on the top of Mobil1 quart bottles, without the straw attachment, of course.
I got a similar type of pump for changing the oil in my boat at West Marine.
I found one like that at Academy Sports and Outdoors. It was used for changing the lower unit oil on outboards.
I also have one like Joe's that adapts to quart and gallon size bottles.
I have used either one, yet, but they will come in handy when needed. I bought them for filling differentials and such, too.
I just installed a 17* in my early 99 and it seems to start a little better and no more codes for low hpop oil. Install was fairly straight forward. Only took a couple hours and that was the first time in have done one.
